Noir de Noir is the unisex eau de parfum Tom Ford launched in 2007 with Private Blend, his first collection of twelve fragrances. A chypre oriental that the house opens on saffron, black rose and black truffle, with a base of vanilla, patchouli, oud wood and moss, in a dark bottle with a gold label.
Undina, in 2011, wavers between attraction and saturation before the rose and oud accord; Kafkaesque, in 2013, finds a dark, rich, earthy rose that ends as a powdery vanilla rose and lasts only four hours on her.
What critics say
Undina’s Looking Glass, November 2011
Undina, on 3 November 2011, cannot make up her mind. Once, she likes the opening rose darkened by oud wood; on two other occasions, the rose and oud accord overwhelms her.
She searches for a long time for the black truffle, which she knows from the truffle salt in her kitchen, and only recognises it once home, by comparison. She prefers the drydown, which lasts about four hours before leaving only a trace.
Kafkaesque, January 2013
Kafkaesque, on 11 January 2013, sees in it a rich, decadent rose, spiced and fleshy, like Henry VIII’s Tudor rose. The opening suggests a heady, almost boozy damask rose to her, with sweet saffron and a very present black truffle, earthy and slightly animalic.
She smells neither oud nor oakmoss, and does not find the chocolate others describe: the fragrance drifts towards a powdery, vanilla rose with hints of candied violet, like Turkish delight. On her, it lasts only four hours, which seems little for its price; she recommends it to rose lovers, men and women alike.
