The return of the Moustache Original perfume from 1949. Perfumery, just like fashion, sometimes sees reminiscences of its past resurface in the midst of the latest trends.
The Moustache Eau de Toilette was born in 1949 and bears no resemblance to Eaux de Cologne. Powerful and virile, Moustache nevertheless draws inspiration from those famous Eaux de Cologne. Marcel Rochas defined his perfume as follows: the true perfume for men, he saw it as one that would please women because it would especially suit men… Moustache would indeed be very different from the perfumes of its time. As for the name of the perfume, Marcel Rochas drew inspiration from one of his visits to the Louvre museum. Fascinated by the portrait of Charles I of England hunting, a bearded and mustachioed man, he then decided to name his perfume Moustache.
A Moustache signed by Edmond Roudnitska
Born in Nice, Edmond Roudnitska (1905-1996) created, together with his wife Thérèse, a creative laboratory named Art et Parfum near Grasse in 1949. It was his meeting in 1943 with Marcel Rochas, who came to ask him for a perfume, that changed his life. Edmond Roudnitska agreed to create the perfume, but had only a single composition to offer him… This was accepted without any changes! This is how the fragrance Femme came into being, in the midst of the Occupation. This first major creation opened the royal roads of the world of Haute Couture to Edmond Roudnitska, who thus established himself as one of the greatest perfumers of his time. Edmond Roudnitska is also responsible for great perfumes such as Eau Sauvage by Dior, and Eau d'Hermès by Hermès.
The fougère aromatic tonalities of Moustache Rochas
The composition of the Eau de Toilette opens on multi-fresh tonalities, combining petitgrain, lavender, bergamot, basil, verbena and lemon. Also called royal herb, basil originates in India. Basil is also a romantic plant dedicated to love, which the Romans used to offer to their betrothed. Basil arrived in Italy in the 15th century and in France a century later. In perfumery, basil essential oil is used. It is obtained through steam distillation of the leaves and flowering tops. Basil releases green, spicy, herbaceous and aromatic tonalities. The heart notes of Moustache Eau de Toilette are rich, floral and sweet, combining honey, carnation, rose, jasmine and geranium. Originating from the Mediterranean rim, carnation has been widespread there since antiquity. The Romans already used it to make crowns and perfumed waters. Carnation is, moreover, depicted in religious paintings, as a symbol of the Virgin Mary and the suffering of Christ. In the language of flowers, carnation symbolizes passion, aspiration and romance. In perfumery, carnation offers scents that are both spicy and floral. Finally, the base of Moustache is meant to be as sensual as it is virile, combining vanilla, oakmoss, tonka bean, amber and musk, thus offering an Eau de Toilette of great power.
