L’Homme À la Rose

L’Homme À la Rose is an eau de parfum by Maison Francis Kurkdjian, released in September 2020: the masculine counterpart to À la Rose, which Francis Kurkdjian presents as his free interpretation of a rose for men. A grapefruit accord and an essence of Damask rose open the composition, clary sage and amber woods extend it, and centifolia rose and cistus close it.

Thomas Dunckley, of The Candy Perfume Boy, smells in it a pale, fresh and green rose water that he finds genderless; Scott McGlashan, of Blu Blazer Guy, a green rose that avoids the heaviness of traditional roses.

What critics say

Thomas Dunckley, The Candy Perfume Boy, September 2020

Thomas Dunckley describes a crisp, dewy opening with a stem-like freshness, crossed by a bright, herbal flash of juniper that evokes gin. As it dries down, the perfume is less a rose than a rose water, with a discreet wood and luminous white musks.

He compares it to a pale rose cologne, loves it without reservation and finds it genderless in practice, beyond its masculine intent. He states that he received the bottle from the brand.

Scott McGlashan, Blu Blazer Guy, October 2020

Scott McGlashan remembers the shimmering bitterness of the grapefruit, carried by a wave of roses. He finds a green inflection in it, like freshly cut rose stems, which avoids the heady notes of traditional roses.

He notes a constant freshness that reminds him of Aqua Universalis, with a floral touch, and an herbal, woody base. He recommends the perfume to men who have never worn a rose.
