Azalée, the sumptuous flower of René Lalique

The abstract nature of the house of Lalique

René Lalique was born in 1860 in a small village in the Marne. He spent his childhood between Paris and this corner of lush nature, which he came to consider a small paradise from an early age. This environment would mark his life forever and would very often feed his work, whether in jewelry or later in glassware. One recalls in particular the superb bottle with the “Lys Noir” motif, created in 1924. This plant was then shown in a more abstract form. It was a stylized flower, magnified and reinvented, evocative of the lotus flowers found on Egyptian frescoes. Also, although René Lalique is no longer of this world today, the house strives to preserve his heritage and to perpetuate the ancestral tradition of the works of this prestigious brand. This is why the fragrance Azalée, created in 2014, drew inspiration from these abstract corollas of the past. Moreover, Lalique sees in the Azalea a symbol of joy and love. Also, as its name rhymes with “envolée” (flight), it is a luminous and airy fragrance. It can notably be compared to a garden bathed in sunlight on a beautiful spring day.

The chypre and fruity tones of Azalée

This olfactory creation is owed to perfumer Michel Almairac. He had the idea of translating the flamboyant flowers of the Azalea, ranging from red to pink. Thus, Azalée opens with a freshness emanating from bergamot combined with the juicy sun-kissed quality of peach. The whole is also embellished with more fruity and floral accents of freesia. Then, the heart of Azalée turns into a true concentration of femininity. It contains predominantly rose. Nevertheless, this queen of flowers is paired with the heady character of gardenia as well as the rich luminosity of sambac jasmine. The whole is however reworked in a more modern and more exuberant manner. It is a little as if one had before one’s eyes an azalea bush in full bloom. The whole then rests on greater depth. Its sillage is steeped in moss and patchouli. Sandalwood, for its part, makes the whole creamier. Finally, amber displays all its sensuality there. Likewise, the pink and red of the Azalea are present in its bottle. It has gently curved sides and contrasts the color of its gradient glass with a very contemporary silvery metal.
