The history of Christian Dior and India dates back practically to its beginnings. In 1962, 8 of Dior's star models set foot in India for the first time to present the new Spring-Summer collection, at the heart of one of the most prestigious palaces in Bombay. From the very start of the Voyage collection in 2008, François Demachy set off to explore the scents of Kerala and Tamil Nadu. François Demachy was born in Cannes in 1949, and is the son of a pharmacist. To pay for his dentistry studies, the young François Demachy joined the factories of the Mane house, a company that manufactures raw materials for perfumes. This encounter considerably changed his life, and François Demachy then embarked on the entirely new path of perfumer. Having previously worked for Chanel or Robertet, François Demachy has been the exclusive perfumer for the house of Dior since 2006. He is currently one of the finest perfumers of his generation. We owe him magnificent fragrances, such as Dahlia Divin by Givenchy, Poison Girl, or Miss Dior, l'Eau de Parfum by Christian Dior.
The Indian scents of Escale à Pondichéry
From India, François Demachy brought back black tea, sandalwood, cardamom, and sambac jasmine, one of the most fragrant jasmines. Escale à Pondichéry opens with cardamom essence. The latter is grown in India as well as in Guatemala. The cardamom develops into a heart filled with black tea essence, mainly grown on the Asian continent. 100 percent natural, teas are highly prized in perfumery, but it is black tea that they favor most. It releases tonalities that are at once warm, woody, and delicately fragrant. Black tea then combines with sambac, this jasmine from India, more powerful with more pronounced orangey tonalities. Then, the base of Escale à Pondichéry develops into a sandalwood essence selected for its great quality. It should be noted that the finest sandalwood is found in India. It offers all its woody, elegant, and sensual scents, wonderfully recalling typically Indian aromas.
