Released in 1970, Equipage is the first masculine perfume from Hermès. Created by Guy Robert, Equipage offers a refined style, of sharing and teamwork. Very aromatic, Equipage is a rather classic fragrance that has managed to find its place in the world of perfumery. The Equipage man is mysterious and refined and his fragrance is a perfect balance. In 1992, Equipage was somewhat modernized, aiming to be softer with a facet that is also more leathery. In 2015, it was Jean-Claude Ellena, the house perfumer of Hermès, who revisited Equipage with Equipage Géranium.
Equipage: The first masculine perfume created by Guy Robert
Born into a family of perfumers, Guy Robert was always passionate about odors and scents. He was a generous man who loved sharing his passion and his knowledge with those around him. He never turned down an interview or a lecture, which he gave in schools and universities. He also wrote a book, Les Sens du Parfum, in which he reveals some of his secrets. On this subject, he states that it is not simple to talk about something sensual, something that is, in short, a dream expressed, that is also a part of ourselves, of our hedonistic universe, and that underlines our personality. Perfumery, he says, is above all a marvelous means of communication, an extraordinary evocation of our memories, a powerful tool, and it is also an art. Guy Robert is responsible for some very beautiful fragrances such as Calèche by Hermès, but also Madame Rochas by Rochas.
Equipage, very aromatic notes with a spicy tendency
Equipage is defined as an aromatic that is both spicy and woody. Between strength and delicacy, Equipage represents the strong values of the Hermès house. Equipage opens with the liveliness of aromatics, that of clary sage. Then, spices come to enhance this liveliness, such as rosewood and mace. Also called nutmeg flower, mace is in fact the thin membrane that surrounds the nutmeg, but its scent is finer than the latter. The heart of Equipage is also contrasted and offers a multitude of sensations, combining floral and soft tonalities, those of lily of the valley and carnation paired with warmer, more spicy tonalities like cinnamon and pine needle. Finally, the base is more powerful and woody thanks to the presence of oakmoss, patchouli and vetiver, a typically masculine ingredient.
