Perfumery is a very vast sector. Today, many countries distinguish themselves in the creation of fragrances. Nevertheless, it must be acknowledged, without any chauvinism, that French perfumery remains by far the most prestigious. Our country has the largest number of perfumers on the planet and our olfactory history is rich with colossal successes. However, this success would be nothing without ambitious men who contributed to it. Such was the case of Guy Robert, a true monument in the world of perfumers.
Guy Robert, a figure destined to become a perfumer
Guy Robert was born into a family of perfumers. As such, he was introduced to the world of scents at a very early age. From then on, he was accustomed to training his olfactory memory from his earliest years. However, one should not think that his profession was a family obligation, quite the contrary. Guy Robert always practiced perfumery with passion. What is more, he had an almost encyclopedic knowledge of perfume. Yet, after all, was he really the only one to possess such theoretical knowledge? Indeed, if Guy Robert currently holds such renown, it is also because he possessed an uncommon generosity. Above all, he loved sharing his passion for his craft. As such, he never refused to give a lecture. Sharing his talent and his knowledge was, for him, as fascinating as creating perfumes themselves. Thus, he regularly spoke at schools and universities. He loved passing on his taste for beautiful things, and did so above all with deep kindness and great humor.
The great works of Guy Robert
Over the course of his career, Guy Robert created an endless number of works. What is more, many of them are true legends of perfumery. Thus, Guy Robert is the father of Dioressence by Dior, Madame Rochas by the eponymous house, and Calèche, Equipage and Doblis by Hermès. Likewise, he also created the iconic Chanel N°19, a fascinating perfume that was, incidentally, the source of inspiration for perfumer Bertrand Duchaufour. Indeed, Duchaufour makes no secret of it and readily states that Guy Robert was one of the triggers of his vocation as a perfumer. Fortunately for us, Guy Robert immortalized his knowledge forever in a very rich book titled Les Sens du Parfum. Yet, as he explains so well, it is not simple to speak of something sensual, something that is, in short, a dream expressed, which is also a part of ourselves, of our hedonistic world, and which underscores our personality. Perfumery, he says, is above all a marvelous means of communication, an extraordinary evocation of our memories, a powerful tool, and it is also an art.
