Chrome Eau de Toilette

Azzaro launched Chrome in 1996 on a premise of transmission between a father and his son. Gérard Haury signed the formula, a fresh citrus laid over a woody, musky base that has traveled the world. The note lists circulating under this name all contradict each other; some of them actually describe a 2015 flanker: only seven materials withstand cross-checking against two independent sources.

Where to buy

Azzaro launched Chrome in 1996 and made it an object of transmission, dedicated to the bond that unites a father and his son. The premise has held for thirty years of campaigns without ever shifting a word.

The gamble was less obvious than it appears. The masculines of the decade sold seduction; this one sold filiation, and it ended up becoming the house's biggest commercial success.

A premise held for thirty years

The house still sums up its eau de toilette today as joie de vivre and shared moments, and pays tribute to the closeness between a father and his son. The words have barely changed since the launch.

A legend accompanies the bottle: the couturier is said to have dedicated it to his grandson. No independent source confirms this and biographies of Loris Azzaro do not name this child. Nothing therefore allows this to be affirmed.

The name says something else. Chrome evokes polished metal, reflection, a cold surface, a promise of crispness that the bottle's blue echoes and that advertising has always tied to the open Mediterranean sea.

Loris Azzaro, from Tunis to Saint-Cloud

Loris Azzaro was born in Tunis on February 9, 1933, to a Sicilian father and a Tuscan mother. He taught Italian in Tunisian schools before moving to Paris in 1962 and opening an accessories business three years later.

The dress worn by Marisa Berenson made him famous in 1968. His perfumes mark the following decades: Azzaro Couture in 1975, Azzaro pour Homme in 1978, Azzaro 9 in 1984, Acteur in 1989, Oh la la in 1993.

Chrome is therefore not his second masculine fragrance, contrary to a widely repeated claim. The house had already launched several, including Acteur, a commercial failure that collectors rehabilitated twenty years later.

In 1997, a family dispute removed him from the artistic direction of his own house. He died of cancer on November 20, 2003, at seventy years old, when his blue bottle was already selling in the millions.

1996, the year the house turned a corner

The launch came at a pivotal moment. The perfume business then belonged to Clarins, which had industrial reach far beyond the means of a Parisian fashion house.

This distribution power explains part of the success. Chrome found its way into department stores as well as American supermarkets, an omnipresence no other creation from the house has enjoyed.

There is a downside. This mass distribution cost it desirability, while its 1978 elder, kept rarer and pricier, retained its aura among discerning enthusiasts.

The acquisition of Azzaro fragrances by L'Oréal Luxe, announced in July 2019, changed nothing about the bottle or the discourse surrounding it. This visual and verbal continuity is in itself a business decision.

A creation turned into a line

Success turned a fragrance into a line. Flankers have multiplied since 2007, carried by other perfumers, with juices that no longer have much in common with the 1996 original.

This proliferation comes at a cost to the reader: material lists blur from one version to the next, and published reviews regularly attribute to the eau de toilette characteristics that belong to later versions.

Thirty years on, the blue bottle still holds its rank. No other masculine creation from the house comes close to it in volume, and no one has ever tried to replace it, only to surround it.

Olfastory’s review

Chrome carries the reputation of an office fragrance, and its wearers own it. Public ratings, close on two independent platforms, say the same thing: solid, clean, never striking. This lukewarm verdict has never dented its sales.

The advertising

Chrome by Azzaro is among the most iconic fragrances on the planet. It came into being in 1996. Since then, its success has never wavered. Naturally, several elements contribute to its renown. First, its fresh scent evocative of the Mediterranean sea is not unrelated to its success. Alongside that, its azure blue bottle is equally appealing. Finally, Azzaro keeps pairing it with consistently poetic advertisements. Let us look in more detail at its 2015 campaign, which highlighted values of sharing and family transmission.

The staging of the advertisement for Chrome by Azzaro

The advertisement for the Chrome by Azzaro fragrance opens on the view of a white villa facing a blue expanse. This is, of course, an evocation of the Mediterranean, so dear to Loris Azzaro, founder of the house. Here, the scene was actually filmed in Antiparos, Greece. The camera then dives into the blue of the water, before following a child's steps through the house. He approaches his parents, smiling... And for good reason: he is about to pour a glass of water on his father's face to tease him, while the father lounges in the sun. A little chase then follows through the villa's stairs, before the two of them join hands to face the beauty of the horizon and the seaside landscape. Standing at the edge of a splendid infinity pool, they decide to join hands and trust each other to jump together into the sea. The scene is quite simple but the magic works instantly. The closeness between the two main actors is palpable, further enhanced by the musical track “Travel where the moon pulls” by Tom Adams.

Closeness and transmission, essential values for the Chrome fragrance

If this advertising campaign speaks to us of a father and his son, it is simply because the Chrome by Azzaro fragrance was born from the closeness between Loris Azzaro and his grandson. Indeed, the house's first masculine fragrance, Azzaro pour Homme, depicted the portrait of a dark, charismatic and powerful man. Chrome, for its part, seems to have mellowed with time. With this fragrance, it is a matter of calm and serenity. Indeed, it was in becoming a grandfather that Loris Azzaro found inner peace. And it is precisely this closeness and these family notions that are at stake here in this television campaign.

The protagonists of the Azzaro advertisement

The Chrome television campaign owes its existence to British director Cristopher Hewitt. Alongside this, the television spot is accompanied by a few photographs, taken by American photographer John Balson. As if to echo the Azzaro bottle, blue dominates throughout these visuals... A clear nod to Chrome's timeless bottle.
