Chance Eau de Toilette

Chance Eau de Toilette is the first version of Chance, the floral Jacques Polge composed for Chanel in 2002. The house describes it as a floral fragrance intertwining pink pepper, jasmine and amber patchouli, by turns floral, spicy, sensual or gourmand. It introduced the round bottle that breaks with the house’s square bottles.

Chanel launched Chance in 2002 with the eau de toilette, the first version of the line. Jacques Polge, then the house’s perfumer, signed the formula; the rounder eau de parfum joined it later. The New York Times presented the launch as a big Chanel bet on young women.

A chance you make

According to the house, Gabrielle Chanel believed in luck and surrounded herself with talismans and lucky charms. Chanel quotes her phrase “A chance came up, I seized it” and describes an unpredictable chance, to be seized in a few seconds, which Mademoiselle Chanel knew how to provoke.

A whole line

The house extended Chance with Eau Fraîche in 2007, Eau Tendre in 2010 and Eau Vive in 2015. Olivier Polge, Jacques Polge’s son, signed Eau Vive and the more recent versions of the line, all of which keep the round bottle of 2002.

Jean-Paul Goude, 2002

In 2002 Jean-Paul Goude signed “Venise,” the launch film for Chance, the first episode of a saga he continued for the whole line.

The launch film for Chance, titled “Venise,” was directed in 2002 by Jean-Paul Goude. The photographer and director had worked with Chanel since the Égoïste campaign in 1990, and became the line’s appointed image-maker.

Goude continued the Chance saga across the variations: a bowling game for Eau Vive in 2015, a dance audition for Chance Eau Tendre Eau de Parfum in 2019, with the choreographer Ryan Heffington.
