Chance by Chanel: the whole line, from 2002 to 2025
Launched in 2002 by Jacques Polge, Chance now counts eight pages: the eau de toilette, the eau de parfum, Eau Fraîche, Eau Tendre, Eau Vive, the eaux de parfum of Eau Tendre and Eau Fraîche, and Eau Splendide, signed by Olivier Polge in 2025.

A chance seized in 2002
Chanel launched Chance in 2002. Jacques Polge, the house’s perfumer since 1978, signed the formula; for the first time, according to Chanel, sensuality and rose entered the house’s codes. The name echoes a phrase by Gabrielle Chanel: “A chance came up, I seized it.”
Twenty-three years later, the line counts eight pages on Olfastory. Jacques Polge developed it until 2010; his son Olivier Polge, who became the house’s perfumer-creator, signed Eau Vive in 2015, the two eaux de parfum of 2019 and 2023, and Eau Splendide in 2025.
The first Chance, in two concentrations
The eau de toilette opened the line in 2002; the eau de parfum, rounder, joined it in 2005. The house describes both around the same trio, pink pepper, jasmine and an amber patchouli, and presents them in the same round bottle.
2002 · Eau de toilette · Pink pepper, jasmine, patchouli
Chance Eau de Toilette
Chanel
Chanel describes an unpredictable, ever-changing fragrance, by turns floral, spicy, sensual or gourmand. The New York Times saw its launch as the house’s bet on young women; Jean-Paul Goude signed its first film, “Venise.”
2005 · Eau de parfum · Pink pepper, jasmine, white musks, vanilla
Chance Eau de Parfum
Chanel
White musks and vanilla make the eau de parfum rounder and more enveloping, according to the house. Anne Vyalitsyna, the face of the first campaign, returned to it in 2011 in front of Goude’s camera. Suzanna, of Bois de Jasmin, sees in it the Chanel she likes least.
One water, one color
Chanel developed Chance through successive waters, each in the round bottle and in a color of its own: the green of Eau Fraîche in 2007, the pink of Eau Tendre in 2010, the orange of Eau Vive in 2015.
2007 · Eau de toilette · Citron, jasmine, teak wood
Chance Eau Fraîche
Chanel
Jacques Polge made it a lighter version of Chance. The house describes a sparkling floral in which the zesty freshness of citron, the softness of jasmine and the vibrant presence of teak wood intertwine; the launch notes add a water hyacinth.
2010 · Eau de toilette · Grapefruit, quince, jasmine
Chance Eau Tendre
Chanel
Launched on April 2, 2010, Eau Tendre sets grapefruit and quince over a heart of hyacinth and jasmine, closed by white musks, cedar and amber. Elena Vosnaki, of Perfume Shrine, judged its softness unworthy of the house’s rank.
2015 · Eau de toilette · Grapefruit, blood orange, cedar
Chance Eau Vive
Chanel
Olivier Polge’s first Chance, Eau Vive opens on grapefruit and blood orange, around a jasmine heart and accords of cedar and iris. Goude filmed a bowling game in which a bottle replaces the ball; Persolaise considers it the liveliest of the Chance waters.
Two eaux de parfum by Olivier Polge
Olivier Polge went back to the waters of 2007 and 2010 to give them a denser version: Eau Tendre Eau de Parfum in 2019, Eau Fraîche Eau de Parfum in 2023. Each keeps the name, the bottle and the accord of its elder.
2019 · Eau de parfum · Grapefruit, quince, jasmine, rose
Chance Eau Tendre Eau de Parfum
Chanel
The house presents a more intense version of the eau de toilette, round and tender, whose heart blooms with jasmine absolute and rose essence. Goude staged a danced audition of four models, choreographed by Ryan Heffington to music by Sam Spiegel.
2023 · Eau de parfum · Citron, jasmine, teak wood
Chance Eau Fraîche Eau de Parfum
Chanel
Launched in mid-August 2023, sixteen years after the eau de toilette, it does more than adjust the concentration: Olivier Polge composed it, according to Chanel, as a fragrance in its own right, around the citron accord, a jasmine heart and a dense, ambery teak wood.
Eau Splendide, the violet of 2025
Chanel launched Eau Splendide on April 15, 2025, the fifth fragrance of the line after the original, Eau Fraîche, Eau Tendre and Eau Vive. After yellow, green, pink and orange, the line adopted violet.
2025 · Eau de parfum · Raspberry, rose geranium, iris
Chance Eau Splendide Eau de Parfum
Chanel
Olivier Polge sets an accord of raspberry, rose and violet sparkling over a heart of rose geranium, grown notably in Chanel’s fields in Grasse. Angèle is its face, in a film by Jean-Pierre Jeunet shot in a hall of mirrors. Rachel K. Ng finds it warm and lively.
What links the Chance fragrances
Olivier Polge has said it himself: no common score links the fragrances of the line, only a shared state of mind. Jasmine nevertheless runs through seven of the eight pages, Eau Splendide preferring a rose geranium, and white musks return in the base of most of them.
The bottle remains. Chance broke in 2002 with Chanel’s square bottles, and each version keeps its round shape while changing color. Jean-Paul Goude filmed its campaigns from 2002 to 2019; Jean-Pierre Jeunet shot those of 2024, in a funfair, and of 2025.
