Gypsy Water

Gypsy Water is an eau de parfum by Byredo launched in 2008, composed by Jérôme Epinette under the direction of Ben Gorham. Inspired by the myth of Romani life, it pairs bergamot, lemon, pepper and juniper berries with a heart of incense, iris and pine needles, over a base of amber, sandalwood and vanilla, in the house’s clear glass bottle.

Portia, on Perfume Posse, loved its lemon meringue pie opening in 2013 and the serenity of a fragrance in three phases, between dry pine and incense. Angela, on Now Smell This, found it easy to like, sweet and refreshing in 2017, but as fleeting as a cologne.

What critics say

Perfume Posse: a serene fragrance

Portia, on October 17, 2013, discovered Gypsy Water through a travel bottle given to her by a friend, Clayton Ilolahia. She loves its gourmand lemon meringue pie opening, very sweet yet tart, a little bready, and finds it serene and cozy, with space between the notes, present without being powerful.

As the gourmand side fades, earthy and woody tones rise on her, with a dry vanilla; the pine needles are almost desiccated, and the incense plays cat and mouse. The base reminds her of the smell of pajamas worn two nights, with nothing dirty about it. She sees a beautiful, well-crafted fragrance in three distinct phases, which she smells for five to seven hours.

Now Smell This: a light water

Angela, on October 2, 2017, wore a travel spray given to her by a friend. The fragrance opens with a prick of bergamot and sweet lemon over a piney incense; amber and sandalwood soon join the incense and swamp the rest.

She finds it easy to like, sweet and refreshing, but after an hour the word water in its name makes full sense: it fades before the morning coffee is finished. For its price, she will not buy a bottle, and prefers Rêve d’Or by Piver, which lasts longer, or Jean Naté, which costs less.
