Two perfumes that also marked the end of Jean-Paul Guerlain’s journey within his own house of perfumery before Thierry Wasser took the helm.
Arsène Lupin Voyou, or the prince of impertinent scents
Jacques Guerlain and Jean-Paul Guerlain, his grandson with equal artistic talents, have both always favored giving their house of perfumery fragrances inspired by art. Painting for Jean-Paul with his Nuit d’Amour, literature for Jacques with Mitsouko, his favorite heroine, or Liu, Puccini’s tragic figure. This time, no female character lies at the heart of this perfume, but certainly one of the most beloved literary characters in France: Arsène Lupin.
Arsène Lupin was created by Maurice Leblanc and quickly won over the public through his double-sided persona, hard to miss, that of a gentleman burglar, at times chic and worldly, at times cunning and thieving. How could Jacques Guerlain not have been inspired by this legendary figure of literature and cinema?
For Arsène Lupin Voyou he thus drew a portrait of the gentleman burglar full of dynamism and impertinence. This takes nothing away from its sensual charm, conveyed through the mystery and warmth of woody notes.
His heists resemble stolen kisses. A repeat offender of seduction, this gentleman burglar, protagonist of Maurice Leblanc’s work, is a hero with a double face. In its Voyou version, the fragrance will win over young gentlemen in search of an olfactory crush. Guerlain, on Arsène Lupin Voyou.
Between striking modernity and a tribute to the past, Arsène Lupin Voyou steals our heart…
The bottle of Arsène Lupin Voyou stands out for its look, both very contemporary and very chic. Dressed in raw, understated wood, Arsène Lupin Voyou features a matching wooden cap that still highlights a distinctive touch of luxury thanks to its handsome silver ring.
Arsène Lupin Voyou opens with a bright, dynamic start composed of lovely bergamot and lemon citrus and powerful aromatic mugwort and coriander. At the heart, Bulgarian rose and clove bring their floral delicacy, while cardamom and sage prove powerfully invigorating. In the depths, sandalwood, benzoin and patchouli recall, of course, the venerable house’s traditional Guerlinade. This does nothing to stop labdanum cistus from lending its animalic power to this lively, unsettling, yet terribly seductive man!
Jean-Paul Guerlain strips a bitter orange of its candid freshness. Spiked with herbs (mugwort, coriander) and berries, it pilfers an armful of bewitching woods (sandalwood, benzoin). The loot: a deliciously mischievous juice. Le Point, on Arsène Lupin Voyou, Les Parisiens de Guerlain.
