He was born on January 9, 1937, in the 16th arrondissement of Paris.

As a teenager, he first wanted to become a literature teacher. To this end, he began studies at the Lycée Condorcet in the capital. However, eyesight problems forced him to abandon this path, and it was thus that he turned toward perfumery. It was his grandfather, the famous Jacques Guerlain, who trained him in this craft. From then on, Jean-Paul Guerlain joined the family company in 1955. He started out as an apprentice trainee. Then, Jacques Guerlain set him a challenge regarding the creation of a fragrance named Jonquille. He judged that his grandson had brilliantly met the challenge, and it was thus that he decided to appoint him head of his company, making him his worthy successor.

The extraordinary olfactory qualities of Jean-Paul Guerlain

Jean-Paul Guerlain was able to recognize 3000 olfactory nuances. Over 45 years of work, he created 43 internationally renowned perfumes. Moreover, we owe him the iconic Vétiver, Habit Rouge, Chamade, Eau de Guerlain, Jardin de Bagatelle, and also Samsara. Likewise, throughout his career, he displayed profound daring. Thus, he was the first perfumer to use civet in perfumes, giving them a highly sensual character. On the other hand, he was a fervent defender of natural materials and, most of the time, opposed their synthetic substitutes. It is estimated today that his fragrances were composed of more than 80% naturally derived essences. To this end, Jean-Paul Guerlain did not hesitate to travel the globe in search of new sources of inspiration. At the same time, he was also greatly influenced by the world of horse riding. Indeed, Jean-Paul Guerlain was an accomplished rider of international caliber.

Jean-Paul Guerlain eventually sold his company to the LVMH group in 1994. He nevertheless remained at its head until 2002. He is currently the founding president and honorary president of the Cosmetic Valley.
