A robot that changes color but keeps the same formula

December 2025, Rabanne releases two limited edition novelties: Fame In Love for her, Phantom In Red for him. Both in red. Both follow the classic flanker recipe: take a formula that works, change a main ingredient, dress the bottle in a new color. This is neither a scandal nor a surprise — it is the standard operating mode of the perfume industry in 2025.

Fame In Love is essentially the original Fame (the 2022 one with mango) where the exotic fruit is replaced by strawberry. The jasmine stays, the incense stays, the vanilla stays. Same structure, same skeleton, just a new fruity dressing. And frankly? It works rather well. Because sometimes the winning formula does not need to be reinvented — it just needs to be cleverly declined.

Strawberry according to Rabanne (spoiler: not the one from your garden)

Rabanne insists heavily on its “innovative extraction technique” to capture the essence of strawberry. Marketing or technical reality? Probably a bit of both. Natural strawberry is notoriously difficult to extract — the fruit contains too much water, not enough essential oils, and the fresh smell degrades quickly. As a result, most “strawberry” fragrances use synthetic accords reconstituting the smell rather than actual molecules extracted from the fruit.

What Rabanne calls “innovative” extraction is probably a supercritical CO2 extraction technique that captures certain volatile molecules that would be lost with classic distillation. The result: a more “realistic” strawberry, less candy-like, with green and slightly tart facets recalling the fresh fruit rather than the strawberry chewing gum found in teen fragrances of the 2000s.

Honestly? It smells good. The strawberry is juicy, gourmand without being cloying, with just enough naturalness to avoid turning into cheap synthetic. It is bright, it is accessible, and for fans of fruity-gourmand fragrances, it is exactly what one expects from a Fame flanker.

The iris that saves the day (once again)

If Fame In Love does not tip over into too-sweet-too-young-too-much, it is thanks to the iris. This powdery-cosmetic note at the heart creates a bridge between the gourmand strawberry of the opening and the creamy vanilla of the base, preventing the whole from becoming a one-dimensional olfactory milkshake.

Iris is this slightly buttery, almost talc-like smell, evoking high-end cosmetics and vintage rice powder. Here, it brings just enough sophistication so as not to feel ridiculous wearing this at the office at 30. Because let us be honest — a strawberry-vanilla fragrance with nothing to complicate it can quickly feel very young.

Jasmine and incense are there too, inherited from the original Fame formula, but they remain discreet. Base notes that give depth without imposing themselves. This is ultimately rather clever: keeping the recognizable Fame DNA (jasmine-incense-vanilla) for fans of the line, while creating a variation different enough to justify the purchase.

The vanilla that surprises no one (but that is fine)

The base of Fame In Love is vanilla. Madagascar absolute, creamy, warm, enveloping. Exactly what one expects. Zero surprise, but also zero disappointment. Sometimes predictability is a quality — especially when creating a flanker of a successful line. People who buy Fame In Love already know what they are coming for: this vanilla-sensual signature that has made the success of the entire Fame range since 2022.

The mineral notes mentioned in the pyramid? Honestly, hard to detect them clearly. They probably add a certain transparency, prevent the whole from being too heavy-sticky-syrupy, but it is not what one notices first (nor second, nor third). Patchouli is not really obvious either — it must be there to give a bit of longevity and structure, but one does not smell a frank patchouli like in Fame Parfum 2023.

Performance: decent without being exceptional. We are talking about 4-6 hours of longevity with moderate projection. This is an Eau de Parfum Intense, so it should normally hold better, but as strawberry is a fairly volatile note, it is logical that the opening fades relatively quickly. The vanilla, on the other hand, clings well to skin and remains detectable at the end of the day.

The red of love (or of marketing, depending)

Visually, Fame In Love is rather successful. The iconic robot of the Fame line dons a deep red — passion red, love red, Valentine red, the message is understood. It is pretty, it is a change from the candy pink of the original or the gold of Fame Parfum. The bottle remains sculptural, photogenic, perfect for Instagram. Which is probably the point, let us be clear-eyed about it.

Rabanne has always excelled in bottle design. From the legendary Million bottle shaped like a gold bar (2008) to the Fame robot (2022), the house knows how to create desirable, collectible objects, which sell as much for their visual aspect as for their olfactory content. Fame In Love fits perfectly into this logic: it is beautiful, it is recognizable, it is “instagrammable”.

A truly limited edition?

Rabanne announces Fame In Love as a limited edition. Well. Everyone knows how this works: either it is truly limited and disappears within a few months (rare), or it is so in demand that it becomes permanent without an official announcement (frequent), or it comes back every year as a “new limited edition” (very frequent). The most likely scenario here? A return of Fame In Love in winter 2026, perhaps with a slightly different bottle, perhaps under another name.

Why this pace? Because Fame is a line in full expansion for Rabanne. Original Fame 2022, Fame Parfum 2023, Fame Blooming Pink (exclusive), Fame Blooming Midnight, and now Fame In Love 2025. Five versions in three years: that is a lot, but it is also the norm for any successful line in 2025 — one declines it as long as demand is there.

For whom, for when?

Fame In Love clearly targets 20-35 year olds who like fruity-gourmand fragrances without falling into too-sweet-childish territory. It is a daytime fragrance, spring-summer-early fall, for casual occasions. Brunch, shopping, casual terrace date. Not a formal evening fragrance nor a corporate office one (too gourmand, not serious enough).

If you liked Burberry Her, you will probably like Fame In Love — several testers actually make the comparison. Same fruity-fresh spirit with a gourmand base, same accessibility, same pleasant-without-being-memorable side. This is not a criticism, it is just an observation: Fame In Love is not trying to be the fragrance of the year, it is trying to be the nice fragrance you wear often and that gets you compliments at the bakery.

Price: approximately €75-95 depending on size (30 ml/50 ml/80 ml). This is fair for a Rabanne EDP Intense, within the average of the designer market. Not cheap, but not exorbitant either. The quality-price ratio is honest — you get what you pay for, no more.

Fame in 2025: from mango to strawberry, and then?

Fame In Love illustrates well the evolution of modern fragrance lines. Original Fame 2022 was a real proposition: mango-jasmine-incense-vanilla, a bold composition mixing exotic fruit and smoky incense, an olfactory bet that was a huge commercial success. Three years later, we are already at simple variations: change the main fruit and there is a new flanker.

Is it commercially clever? Absolutely. Is it creative olfactorily? Not really. But then, Rabanne never claimed to make artistic haute perfumery. The house makes accessible, pleasant, commercial designer perfume. And in this category, Fame In Love does exactly what is expected of it.

Alternatives if you are hesitant

If the strawberry-iris-vanilla concept appeals to you but you want to compare: Burberry Her remains the affordable reference in this register (€60-80), with a less sweet strawberry and a musky rather than vanilla base. Lancome La Vie Est Belle Soleil Cristal also plays the strawberry-iris-patchouli card, but in a more chic-luxe way (€120+). If you are looking for a more natural-green strawberry, Miss Dior Blooming Bouquet is interesting, even though very different in structure.

And if you are hesitating between Fame In Love and other Fame flankers? Fame Parfum 2023 (mango-wood-incense) is more complex and mature. Fame Blooming Pink is more floral-powdery. Original Fame remains the most balanced of the range. But In Love is probably the most accessible, the easiest to wear, the one that will please the most people.

The verdict without detour

Fame In Love is not a revolutionary fragrance. Nor is it a mediocre one. It is an honest flanker of a successful line, doing what it has to do without pretension: smelling good with strawberry-vanilla, with just enough iris-jasmine-incense sophistication to not feel too young.

Should you absolutely buy it if you already have original Fame? Probably not — unless you are truly a fan of strawberry and mango does not suit you. Is it a good first Fame purchase if you are discovering the line? Yes, it might even be the most accessible of all the flankers to start with.

The red robot is pretty. The strawberry smells good. The vanilla does its job. The iris saves the whole from being too sweet. Decent performance, reasonable price, clear target. Everything is there. This is effective perfume, not great olfactory art. And sometimes, effectiveness is amply enough.

There it is. Nothing more, nothing less. Fame In Love is exactly what its name suggests: Fame, love version, in passion red, with strawberry instead of mango. If this speaks to you, you will like it. If it does not speak to you, you will not miss anything essential. The honest fragrance par excellence.
