Strawberry
Strawberry: Red fruits and the gourmand fragrance family Known since prehistoric times when Lucy picked small wild strawberries, strawberry has been cultivated for centuries for its delicate, sweet aromas that burst through in many pastries. It was therefore quite logical that when the trend for fragrances with fruity notes appeared in the 80s, strawberry became one of the noses' favorite fragrances. Yet the strawberry note does not exist in nature! It is thanks to synthetic molecules that strawberry is created and transformed for the greater pleasure of our senses, thirsty for scents of childhood and orchards...
The creation of strawberry notes in perfumery
One might think that creating a note with the sweet scent of wild strawberry or gariguette strawberry would be as simple as delicately sniffing it while picking strawberries in the strawberry patch. Well, no! Despite multiple unsuccessful attempts, many of the fruits and also flowers whose natural scents we know are absolutely impossible to reproduce to create fragranced notes.
Thus, the composition of a fruity note based on strawberry focuses mainly on the creation of synthetic molecules that precisely evoke the delicate scent we know. And that is not enough! Sometimes new synthetic molecules must be added, combined with essences or absolutes, to create THE strawberry or wild strawberry scent. The strawberry note found in one of your favorite fragrances will certainly be created using 4 or 5 different raw materials.
Strawberry and red fruit fragrances, or the sweet memory of childhood?
Sweet and fruity fragrances are enjoying tremendous success today, thanks in particular to the very first fragrance, launched in 1978, to offer young girls a fresh breeze of flowers and fruits: the famous Anaïs Anaïs by Cacharel. Since then, sweet, fruity and gourmand fragrances have continued to charm young women first, then the entire female population, notably thanks to the originality and striking fragrances of Angel by Thierry Mugler.
Since then, feminine perfumery has dared every blend of fragrances and families, as long as the juice sparkles with fruits, is tender with flowers or woods, and above all joyful and vitamin-packed! As for the strawberry note, it can be evoked in two different ways: traditionally as a fruit, but also in an ultra-sweet way as an olfactory memory of the famous Tagada strawberry candy.
Many beautiful fragrances exhale strawberry among other fruity notes, mainly as a top note, including the floral and fruity Miss Dior by Dior, the lovely floral, fruity and woody Daisy by Marc Jacobs, or the oriental and very Italian Valentina by Valentino.
Why have sweet and gourmand fragrances been driving feminine perfumery sales wild for several years now? Undoubtedly, this question is asked regularly, so much does the wave of gourmand, sweet and fruity scents sweep away, with delight, women of every generation. Originally created for young girls (such as Anaïs Anaïs), these fruity scents play on the reminiscence and memory of candy, sunny afternoons spent picking strawberries or raspberries in gardens. Moreover, our little gourmand neurons' preference for sweetness would appear to be innate: the preference for sweetness is not acquired but genetically determined. So one might as well indulge in soft, sweet fragrances that, at least, will not make anyone gain weight!
