Joy, the emblem of the Jean Patou house
A tribute to the wealthy clients of Jean Patou
Joy is a fragrance that has since become legendary and that helped establish Jean Patou's reputation throughout the world. Indeed, it was born in the aftermath of the 1929 crash. At that time, Jean Patou had the idea of offering a sufficiently rich gift to his wealthy American clients who could no longer travel to Paris because of the crisis. He then asked his perfumer, Henri Alméras, to create an extraordinary fragrance for him, an exceptional fragrance worthy of his loyal clients at the salon on Rue Saint-Florentin. Several samples were then submitted to him. However, none of them truly satisfied Jean Patou. In his view, they lacked that small extra soul essential to creating a masterpiece. The house's nose and Jean Patou himself then had the idea of combining the noblest and most expensive raw materials in the world: Bulgarian rose, May rose and Grasse jasmine. However, although this composition delighted the designer, it was still not powerful enough for his taste. He said: when I want to make an impressive ensemble, I use a richer fabric, one that I double. Do the same with this fragrance, double the concentration! This is how Joy considerably increased the concentration of these ingredients, doubling the cost of this fragrance at the same time. Joy thus became the most expensive fragrance in the world. Nevertheless, it was this that made its international reputation. Joy was then reserved exclusively for a privileged clientele, epitomized by actresses Constance Bennet or Louise Brooks.
The exuberant scent of Joy
Needless to say, Joy is a fragrance of incomparable quality. It thus symbolizes the exuberance of Paris despite sometimes difficult times. Moreover, to give an idea of its prestige, it takes no less than 10,600 jasmine flowers and 28 dozen roses to create 30 ml of it! Furthermore, its composition does not stop there. It is also accompanied by a bouquet of flowers composed of Bulgarian rose, lily of the valley, tuberose, ylang-ylang and aldehydes. Its base, meanwhile, combines the depth of sandalwood with the sensuality of musk. Undoubtedly, it truly deserves its title as a legend of perfumery.
