Adieu Sagesse, the first perfume by Jean Patou

Adieu Sagesse… When the body surrenders

Jean Patou is a well-known figure of the early twentieth century. He quickly built a fine reputation in the world of couture. In 1925, however, he was one of the first couturiers to venture into perfumery. In fact, he followed closely in the footsteps of Mademoiselle Chanel, who had already turned to this field a few years earlier. Yet, in order to assert his originality, Jean Patou launched not one but three perfumes. These represented three defining moments of love. Que Sais-Je? is the perfume symbolizing the moment when the mind questions itself. Deux Amours is the one where the heart races. Finally, Adieu Sagesse is the fragrance of letting go. It depicts the image of a woman surrendering and succumbing to passion in a genuine surge of emotion. In this sense, it is a perfume that exalts the seductive character of the woman who wears it.

Jean Patou's bouquet of white flowers

Also, in order to symbolize women's emotion, Jean Patou and Henri Alméras, the perfumers behind this creation, decided to craft a sort of concentrate of white flowers. Thus, Adieu Sagesse leaves behind a floral fragrance of intense purity. It is built entirely around the heady scent of gardenia. Its top notes are nonetheless accompanied by the lightness of lily of the valley. Its heart, meanwhile, highlights the luminosity of neroli and jonquil. Carnation then contrasts the whole with its slightly spicy nuance. Finally, the base of Adieu Sagesse is more opulent and suave. It releases the elegance of tuberose and opoponax, enhanced by the sensual animalic quality of civet and musk. As for the bottle, Adieu Sagesse was originally housed in a case made by Baccarat and designed by Louis Süe and André Mare, two essential Art Deco artists. However, this prestigious bottle has since been replaced. Indeed, since 2014, Adieu Sagesse has been part of the Héritage collection from the house of Jean Patou and it now shares the case common to the entire range.

Adieu Sagesse Eau de Parfum, Heritage Collection by Jean Patou

The house of Jean Patou has shaped the world of Haute Parfumerie. This reputation is reflected today in the return of the three classics from Jean Patou's world of romantic sentiments.

Adieu Sagesse is a floral perfume with a voluptuous sillage. Adored for its distinctive notes, it opens on vibrant notes of neroli and lily of the valley blended with the bold scents of grapefruit and rhubarb. The heart of the perfume features gardenia mingled with tuberose, accompanied by narcissus and clove. The base, meanwhile, combines coconut and iris, reinforced by white musks to create a fragrance with lasting longevity on skin.

Embrace the opulence of a unique historic perfume that instantly evokes memories of summer romances.
