It was with the Eau de Cologne Impériale by the very first perfumer of the Guerlain family, Pierre François Pascal Guerlain, that the venerable perfume house earned its place among the great names of the world. From then on, each perfumer of the house would have to create their own Eau de Cologne in homage to this first success; Jean-Paul Guerlain chose to compose his hymn to spring with Eau de Guerlain.
Eau de Guerlain, or the heritage of three generations of perfumers
Between the Eau de Cologne and the Guerlain perfume house lies a great and very long love story that began in 1853, the year in which the founder of the Guerlain perfumery gave Queen Eugénie a bottle of Eau de Cologne Impériale to relieve her ailments. Queen Eugénie could no longer do without it, and Guerlain quickly became a highly respected name in the world of perfumery.
To honor this great memory, each official perfumer of the house had to compose a new Eau de Cologne to mark their time within the walls built by Pierre François Pascal Guerlain. Aimé Guerlain offered in 1894 the aromatic citrus Eau de Cologne du Coq, Jacques Guerlain gave us the Mediterranean Eau de Fleurs de Cédrat in 1920, and his grandson Jean-Paul offered Eau de Guerlain in 1974.

However, Eau de Guerlain adorns itself with an entirely novel floral heart for a Cologne, where jasmine, neroli and carnation echo woody base notes. This chypre structure, surprising for Guerlain, is precisely what makes Eau de Guerlain regarded as a fragrance in its own right, so strong is its presence. Thus, unlike other Guerlain Colognes, Eau de Guerlain cannot be blended with other fragrances.
