Déclaration, Jean-Claude Ellena's masterpiece for Cartier, is precisely an example of this. When Jean-Claude Ellena imagined a men's fragrance for the house of Cartier, he wanted it to be the portrait of an epicurean in a linen shirt, a splash of Eau de Cologne after a night of love, savoring his tea in a Moroccan souk. Jean-Claude Ellena, perfume note.
Thus he brought to life a men's composition entirely at odds with the fresh-fragrance bottles of the 1990s, in which woody notes would confront spices, and freshness would confront sensual woods. It would be named Déclaration and would become one of the house of Cartier's bestsellers and one of Jean-Claude Ellena's greatest successes in perfumery before he went on to join the house of Hermès.
Given such success, how could Cartier not go on to compose equally extraordinary variations? With Jean-Claude Ellena gone, it is the talented Mathilde Laurent who would compose new fragrant chapters for Déclaration, including the lovely and powerful Déclaration d'un Soir and Déclaration Parfum, released in 2018.
