Althaïr

Published

Althaïr is an eau de parfum by Parfums de Marly launched in 2023, composed by Hamid Merati-Kashani and Ilias Ermenidis. Amber and aromatic, it pays tribute to Bourbon vanilla, which it brightens with bergamot, mandarin and elemi, warms with cinnamon and cardamom around orange blossom, and sets on a base of guaiac wood and praline.

Sophie Normand praises a creamy, balanced vanilla, not especially innovative but pleasant; Yana Zhakhouskaya likes its pairing of vanilla and cinnamon but finds it linear and likes neither its bottle nor the brand’s strategy.

Olfastory’s review

A creamy vanilla

Sophie Normand, writing for Fragrantica, describes a creamy vanilla with liqueur-like nuances, aired out in the top by citrus and orange blossom, and lifted by an interplay of warm and cold between cinnamon and cardamom.

She finds the gourmand side present without dominating, picks up a woody tobacco facet and regrets the synthetic milky woods in the base. The accord does not strike her as innovative, but she finds the whole pleasant: an assertive vanilla made for all genders.

A reservation

Yana Zhakhouskaya, writing for Cosmetiqua magazine, likes the meeting of a fresh vanilla and cinnamon, and finds it has a gourmand hook without excessive sweetness, unisex with a hint of masculinity.

She faults it for a linearity that can grow tiresome, dislikes the color of the bottle and criticizes the brand’s strategy, which she considers geared more toward sales than toward artistic expression.
