The house breaks Man Parfum down into three stages of three materials: bergamot, apple and black pepper at the top; lavender, orange blossom and artemisia, or mugwort, at the center; amber, benzoin and patchouli at the base. It classifies the whole as an ambery fougère.

What the house declares

Sparkling bergamot opens onto the spicy energy of black pepper. Lavender, described as sensual, joins orange blossom at the center, and an ambery base, enriched with benzoin and patchouli, is meant to leave an intense trail that lingers.

What the label declares

The house publishes a complete ingredient list. Once the solvent, water and fragrance are named, tetramethyl acetyloctahydronaphthalenes, the Iso E Super of perfumers, opens the series of materials, ahead of linalyl acetate, bergamot oil, linalool and coumarin.

The list goes on to name limonene, an ultraviolet filter, vanillin, pinene, lavender oil, alpha-isomethyl ionone, patchouli oil, beta-caryophyllene, citronellol, bitter orange oil, citral, camphor, terpineol, rose ketones, carvone, geraniol and sclareol.

What remains outside the declared accord

The lavender, bergamot and coumarin on the label form the traditional framework of a fougère, which the house claims. Vanillin and sclareol, derived from clary sage, carry the ambery part of the base alongside patchouli.

Neither benzoin, nor orange blossom, nor mugwort, nor apple appears under its own name: all remain blended into the generic term fragrance. Iso E Super, which the copy leaves unmentioned, is nonetheless the first material named on the list.
