For Him Eau de Toilette

For Him is the first men’s fragrance from Narciso Rodriguez, launched in the summer of 2007, four years after For Her. Francis Kurkdjian built it around musk, the house signature, with violet leaf, patchouli, and amber. The house presents it as a modern fougère modeled on the great fougères of the 1980s; in 2008 it won the awards for best men’s fragrance and best bottle.

Kevin, on Now Smell This, praises a simple, well-composed fougère, green at the opening and woody in the base, far from a department-store scent; Apicius, on Parfumo, admits his puzzlement at a green opening with hints of melon.

What critics say

Kevin, Now Smell This, August 2007

Kevin counts For Him among fragrances with a brief development which, after a spark, settle almost immediately into a warm glow. In the eau de toilette, he smells new grass, damp moss, and wet bark; the opening violet leaf reminds him of watermelon rind and cucumber.

The shift toward light woods, patchouli, and amber is quick; he finds these notes clear and soft, neither vanillic nor animalic, and likens For Him to Jules by Dior. Without calling it groundbreaking, he finds it well built and far from a department-store scent.

Apicius, Parfumo, April 2010

Apicius says he was baffled: smelled without knowing its pyramid, For Him first seemed green to him, with a hint of melon, before a more oriental volume took over. He thought he detected tonka bean and woods, and guesses at the lavender more than he smells it.
