Grand Soir is Maison Francis Kurkdjian’s amber, composed in 2016 by Francis Kurkdjian around the image of a Parisian night with its illuminated bridges. The house brings together the warm vanilla of Siam benzoin and Brazilian tonka bean, jostled by the dark depth of Spanish cistus labdanum, and classes it among ambery woody fragrances.
Angela, at Now Smell This, sees in Grand Soir a dense, sparkling amber-woody fragrance, a marvel of excess like a chocolate lava cake, which she recommends to anyone still looking for their amber.
What critics say
A marvel of excess, for Now Smell This
In June 2017, Angela compared Grand Soir to a chocolate lava cake: a dense, sparkling amber-woody fragrance, perhaps too rich, but one she finds hard to resist. She declines to describe a pyramid and speaks instead of a plunge into a pool of golden materials.
She detects saffron, a little cinnamon, perhaps a breath of oud, and a benzoin whose texture she loves. Later on, the grand soir turns, in her words, into a morning at the pastry shop, a simple and comforting vanilla wood. She recommends the fragrance to anyone still looking for their amber.
