Eau de Rochas

Eau de Rochas, the quintessential Rochas fragrance The story of the house of Rochas began in 1925 when Marcel Rochas, aged 23, founded his couture house. He envisioned a fashion inspired by audacity, joie de vivre and elegance. His vision of femininity, at once comfortable and highly elegant, quickly won over the whole world.

Eau de Rochas Eau de Toilette is a perfume that appeared in 1970, modernizing the original Eau de Rochas fragrance, created much earlier, in 1948. Signed by perfumer Nicolas Mamounas, this composition has remained unchanged for five decades, enveloping the women who wore it in a highly refreshing, floral and aromatic breath, a promise of renewed energy in daily life. Moreover, while this fragrance has managed to stand the test of time, its bottle, too, remains faithful to what it has always been. Let us look in more detail at its now world-famous design today.

Eau de Rochas Eau de Toilette, a bottle unchanged since 1948

First of all, let us note that this bottle immerses us in the history of French perfumery. Indeed, while the Eau de Toilette edition of Eau de Rochas was created in 1970, its bottle is much older. It already belonged to the first version of Eau de Rochas from 1948. It is therefore a timeless piece, offering us on its own a part of the rich history of French perfumery. Born of artisanal craftsmanship, it has kept its visual intact for many decades, winning over every generation along the way.

Rock as a source of inspiration

Did you know that, initially, in 1948, Eau de Rochas was first called Eau de Roche. This is precisely what inspired its bottle. Its ridged glass appears to be carved directly from the material itself. Its steep walls evoke the shape of rock. In reality, the idea was to evoke water trapped within this rock, as though uncorking this bottle were enough to become intoxicated with this entirely natural scent, drawn from the heart of the elements. This also gives it a very particular touch. Eau de Rochas appears in a bottle whose walls seem eroded by water over the ages.

A color evocative of eau de Cologne

The transparent glass of the Eau de Rochas bottle, meanwhile, reveals to us all the beauty and luminosity of a lemon-toned perfume. Here again, the choice of this color is not innocent. Indeed, when Marcel Rochas asked perfumer Edmond Roudnitska to create this perfume, in 1948, his brief was to modernize the traditional eau de Cologne. Now, this pale yellow color is emblematic of the eaux de Cologne of old. As an echo of its original source of inspiration, Eau de Rochas has preserved this color.

Rochas signs a true piece of jewelry

Finally, let us note that this glass cylinder is topped with an elegant transparent ball serving as a cap. This is finely chiseled, in the manner of a genuine gemstone. A specific spot is set aside to hold this perfume’s label. Between simplicity, timelessness and mastery of artisanal craftsmanship, this bottle alone conveys the full expertise of the house of Rochas in bottle design and, more broadly, in perfumery.
It should also be noted that Eau de Rochas has the distinctive feature of existing in unusual sizes, of 50, 100 or even 220 ml.
