Another 13

Another 13 was born in 2010 from a commission by AnOther Magazine to Le Labo, as a limited edition of 500 bottles. Nathalie Lorson built around ambroxan a formula of thirteen ingredients featuring pear, apple, green citrus and ambrette seed. After colette closed at the end of 2017, Le Labo took it into its permanent collection and describes it as a synthetic animal musk lifted by jasmine and moss.

In 2010, Victoria of Bois de Jasmin and Robin of Now Smell This credited Nathalie Lorson with dressing ambroxan in other notes, but found Another 13 linear, dominated by a musky, woody accord.

What critics say

Victoria, Bois de Jasmin, November 2010

Victoria places Another 13 in a wave of fragrances devoted to ambroxan, a material she considers complex, musky and warm. She sees more in it than a simple dilution, unlike Juliette Has a Gun’s Not a Perfume.

Fizzy at the start, the fragrance takes, in her view, a dry woody direction that it keeps to the end. The effect strikes her as pleasant but no more, one-dimensional and flat, like Escentric 02 before it.

To enjoy ambroxan at its best, she recommends instead Frédéric Malle’s Géranium pour Monsieur, Lancôme’s Mille et Une Roses or Robert Piguet’s Calypso.

Robin, Now Smell This, October 2010

Robin compares Another 13 with Escentric 02, another fragrance built on ambroxan. Le Labo’s strikes her as more linear, dominated by ambroxan and wood, and distinctly bolder.

She finds it less animalic than vintage fragrances with real ambergris, but pleasantly dirty and sensual. To her it has the feel of a showpiece: fun, probably good for layering, but not for every day.
