Pomegranate

Pomegranate is a fruit filled with small ruby-colored grains, called arils. Its taste is both sweet and tangy. Pomegranate is packed with water since it contains more than 80% of it. The largest pomegranate producers are the United States, Iran, and also India. Pomegranate appeared very early around the Mediterranean rim and was cultivated alongside olive trees. Its bright red grains earned it the status of symbol of blood, and therefore of life and fertility. Pomegranate is widely used in dietary supplements, as it has a significant richness in antioxidants.

Pomegranate, fruity notes reflecting its color

Because of its color, pomegranate is considered an energetic and exotic fruit. Pomegranate immediately gives off fresh, fruity scents. Green, tangy, and sometimes slightly spicy notes can also be detected. Its very tangy and highly original scent makes it a widely popular shower gel fragrance. Pomegranate is used in perfumery mainly in feminine compositions, as it brings an exotic touch to them. However, the essential oil is not extracted from the fruit. The scent of pomegranate is reproduced identically in the laboratory, notably using the headspace technique.

Pomegranate and its olfactory pairings

Naturally, pomegranate belongs to the “fruity” olfactory family. Thanks to its fruity freshness, pomegranate pairs perfectly well with other fruits, but above all with flowers. It can be found in many ultra-feminine fragrances, such as in Dior Addict Eau Fraiche by Christian Dior, where pomegranate appears as a heart note accompanied by freesia and lily of the valley. In Boss Orange Sunset by Hugo Boss, pomegranate stands alone as a top note, then is paired in the heart with orange blossom and tuberose, and in the base with vanilla and sandalwood. The result is an exquisite fruity floral composition.
