Sophie Labbé

While perfumery is a male-dominated profession, women are increasingly becoming perfumers in their own right. In this respect, Sophie Labbé is one of the most celebrated fragrance creators. This attractive brunette with an infectious smile creates fragrances for the greatest luxury houses and ensures that each one tells a story. A look back at her career, her creations and her method of composition.

Sophie Labbé, a nature lover turned perfumer

While most perfumers are born in the Grasse region, this is not the case for the charming Sophie Labbé. She was born in 1964, in Charente. She still remembers her rural childhood spent admiring the most beautiful things nature has to offer. Indeed, Sophie Labbé has always been a fervent enthusiast of days spent outdoors. However, although she had always loved smelling the scent of flowers, her first ambition was not to become a perfumer. At first, she simply pursued a scientific path. Once she had graduated in chemistry and biology, she had a decisive encounter in her life. One day, she had the opportunity to speak with Jean Kerleo, the nose of the house Jean Patou. He revealed to her the magic of his profession and the passion with which he practiced it. Utterly won over, Sophie Labbé set her mind on following the same path. She thus enrolled at the most prestigious perfumery school on the planet: the ISIPCA in Versailles. Once she had earned her diploma, she was hired by International Flavors & Fragrances, a true giant of the flavor and fragrance industry. Sophie Labbé has now been practicing her craft with passion within their workshops for more than 20 years.

The romantic fragrances of Sophie Labbé

From her childhood spent in the countryside, Sophie Labbé has retained a certain sensitivity combined with an unconditional love for natural raw materials. A passionate and hardworking woman, she is known for her gentleness and her smile. And it is precisely this quality that can be felt in each of her compositions. That said, she is not lacking in character and oversees roughly twenty projects simultaneously for various clients around the world. While some call her a genius, flattering as that may be, she prefers to speak of hard work instead. Sophie Labbé never shies away from a task and does not hesitate to spend several years on the same formula until she achieves the desired harmony. For her, a fragrance must evoke an atmosphere and tell a story. Her process always unfolds in the same way, and Sophie Labbé says she composes her fragrances like Lego, following her clients’ specifications and assembling the notes piece by piece. Sophie Labbé notably composed Very Irresistible by Givenchy, Parisienne by Yves Saint-Laurent, and Signoria by Salvatore Ferragamo.
