Where to buy

It should be noted that all Clinique products undergo allergy testing and are developed with the help of dermatologists. The release of the perfume Aromatics Elixir in 1972 runs counter to this policy. Very different from the sanitized image that the Clinique brand had at the time, Aromatics Elixir presented itself as a perfume with strong character.

Aromatics Elixir, a very particular elixir

From its release, Aromatics Elixir achieved great success in the United States. Representing a chypre family that had until then been neglected, Aromatics Elixir conveyed the idea of a new kind of chic. The creating perfumer Bernard Chant bore the heavy task of creating a timeless and unconventional perfume. Unique, with a very assertive character, Aromatics Elixir stands out from its very first aldehydic notes with metallic accents. Its soapy quality is also reminiscent of the very famous N°5 by Chanel. The floral and chypre effluvia of Aromatics Elixir offer an elegant and chic perfume. It makes women more seductive and more sensual. Born more than 40 years ago, Aromatics Elixir still ranks among the 30 best-sellers in France. If its reputation no longer needs proving, Aromatics Elixir has left its indelible mark on the world of perfumery.

Aromatics Elixir, a heady fragrance

Aromatics Elixir opens with aromatic effluvia of chamomile, verbena, geranium, and clary sage. Its heart then develops into a very floral chypre bouquet thanks to the presence of Bulgarian rose, jasmine, ylang-ylang, and tuberose. The base is green and chypre, combining vetiver, oakmoss, and patchouli. The relaxing aromatic scents of the opening gradually give way to spicy, heady, almost animalic notes. Its bottle is simple and understated. With its apothecary-flask appearance, Aromatics Elixir gives the impression of a magic potion from another era. Nothing in particular was done to catch the eye, because all the beauty of Aromatics Elixir lies inside the bottle.

Clinique is a brand that came into being at the end of the 1960s. It quickly made a name for itself thanks to its pure, hypoallergenic, almost dermatological products. Released in 1972, the perfume Aromatics Elixir, with its chypre and floral fragrance, seduced immediately. Not only did it restore the chypre family, then considered old-fashioned, to a place of honor, but above all, it enhanced the seductive side of women. Enchanting and timeless, Aromatics Elixir is an undisputed reference in the world of perfumery. More than 40 years after its release, it remains one of women's favorite perfumes.

Olfastory’s review

It was in 1968 that the house of Clinique was born, from a collaboration between Carol Phillips, editor-in-chief at Vogue, and Estée Lauder. Together, they set out to create fragranced compositions and cosmetics that were gentle on the body and skin. Clinique remains to this day one of the world's foremost references in dermatological beauty products. Yet in 1972, with its powerful, almost medicinal breath, Aromatics Elixir created a surprise within the house. Today, it remains one of the most fascinating fragrances in the history of perfumery. Here is our review of it.
