Bernard Chant
Being a perfumer is quite an original profession. Indeed, it always makes an impression. After all, what could be more logical? At school, people learn to read and write. Yet when does one truly learn to smell? For that, one must wait until turning 18 and walk through the doors of a perfumery school. From there, only a select few manage to reach the very top and make a name for themselves. Such was the case of Bernard Chant, a perfumer who collaborated on several major creations and whose name is now forever inscribed in history.
Bernard Chant, perfumer at IFF
Some perfumers choose to work for one particular house. As the exclusive nose of a luxury brand, they immediately benefit from a certain notoriety. Others, however, prefer to collaborate with major groups specializing in aromas, which allows them to work for multiple brands and vary their styles. Bernard Chant thus chose to work for International Flavors & Fragrances, an international company known as IFF. Founded in 1833, this company is today a key player in the world of perfumery. Enjoying unprecedented notoriety and a colossal history, IFF manufactures fragrances for the perfume industry and flavors for the food industry. Today, it is the third-largest company in its sector in terms of revenue. By choosing to work for this company based in New York, Bernard Chant thus opened himself up to multiple collaborations. Moreover, this creator joined the group in the 60s. He remained there until the 80s. During those roughly twenty years, Bernard Chant created numerous great classics such as Cabochard, Aramis, Beautiful, Azurée… He worked mainly for the houses Estée Lauder as well as Grès and Clinique. It was, moreover, within this latter brand that he crafted the most legendary of his creations.
Bernard Chant, creator of the iconic Aromatics Elixir by Clinique
It was in 1972 that Bernard Chant crafted the fragrance Aromatics Elixir for the house Clinique. Moreover, it was the brand's first fragrance creation, having been founded four years earlier within the Estée Lauder group. The surprise was absolutely immense upon the release of this fragrance. Indeed, Aromatics Elixir is a fragrance that runs entirely counter to the clean, even sterile, image of the Clinique brand. Nevertheless, the success was absolutely immense and Aromatics Elixir instantly became a kind of modern embodiment of 70s chic. Although its image was never conveyed through any advertising, Aromatics Elixir today enjoys absolutely staggering notoriety. This fragrance is still supported today by a loyal clientele seeking a strong and original olfactory identity. The notoriety of Aromatics Elixir thus allows Bernard Chant to inscribe himself in a form of timelessness. This creator thus became, at the time of its creation, one of the greatest noses in the history of modern perfumery.
