Labdanum

Labdanum gum is an odorous resin obtained from cistus leaves. Cistus is a small shrub with ornamental pink or white flowers. The labdanum shrub is native to the Middle East, but also grows in the mountains of Mediterranean coastal regions. This resin, which has a strong balsamic and amber olfactory power, was used in antiquity to make incense. Today, labdanum gum is used in perfumes, mainly orientals and chypres. Labdanum is also blended with leather, amber or fougère fragrances. For perfume creators, it is a pure delight, as the results are true little gems.

Labdanum, medicinal virtues

Labdanum has astringent and antiseptic properties. In cases of bronchitis or rhinitis, it soothes the respiratory system. In cases of skin conditions, rosacea, wounds or acne, it brings great relief and aids healing. It is also used to regulate the nervous system. Labdanum releases a warm, intense odor. It can also give an amber, caramel or balsamic aroma. It is widely used in essential oil form and in aromatherapy. In perfumery, labdanum is often used as a base note, where it brings an animalic note. Cistus labdanum is found in several olfactory families, namely chypre, oriental, aromatic and citrus. The exceptional notes offered by labdanum evoke the orient, hookah smoke, incense and all manner of oriental daydreams.

The delightful blends of labdanum

Labdanum is highly favored by perfume creators, who use and make ample use of this very particular resin. Cistus labdanum is found in oriental men’s fragrances. There, it is blended with warm, rich notes such as vanilla or with opulent woody notes such as patchouli or sandalwood. One thinks here of Bois d’Iris by Van Cleef & Arpels, where vetiver and iris appear as heart notes, along with labdanum and ambergris as base notes. The blend of these fragrances gives a soft, woody and amber perfume. Cistus labdanum is also found in oriental fragrances for women. Here, it is paired with vanilla and floral scents, which bring warm, sensual notes to the perfume. Also present in chypre fragrances for women, cistus labdanum is then blended with patchouli and bergamot fragrances. One thinks here of Miss Dior by Christian Dior, where chypre fragrances are cleverly blended with jasmine or Grasse rose. This results in an extremely feminine, bold and elegant perfume.

Beyond its many medicinal properties, cistus labdanum has made its mark on some of the greatest perfumes.
