Launched by Chanel in 2020, first in the Middle East, Le Lion de Chanel joined Les Exclusifs as a tribute to Gabrielle Chanel’s astrological sign. Olivier Polge composed an ambery, woody, leathery scent: bergamot and lemon at the top, labdanum and amber in the middle, vanilla, patchouli, sandalwood and musk in the base. Persolaise counts it among the house’s great successes.

Chanel describes an intensely ambery eau de parfum, with ambery, woody and leathery notes of labdanum and patchouli, awakened by bergamot and lemon and softened by vanilla. The notes given by the house place bergamot and lemon at the top, labdanum and amber in the middle.

The base brings together Madagascar vanilla, patchouli, sandalwood and musk. The house sums it up in three words, ambery, woody and intense, and speaks of a warm, majestic and refined fragrance.

Beyond the official notes

Persolaise hears in the bergamot and lemon pairing an echo of Shalimar, in a suede note a memory of Cuir de Russie, in the patchouli one of Coromandel. Kafkaesque also perceives a smoky birch tar leather, jasmine, incense and aldehydes.

What the label declares

The ingredient list published by Chanel names, after alcohol, fragrance and water, bergamot, lemon, orange and patchouli oils, and further down lavender, cananga, jasmine and sandalwood oils, along with santalol.

Jasmine therefore appears there, although the house’s notes do not mention it and Kafkaesque reported smelling it. The list ends with the regulated allergens, including coumarin, vanillin and eugenol, and carries neither UV filter nor colorant.
