Joop! Homme, an Eau de Toilette for men launched in 1989 by the German house JOOP!, is the work of Michel Almairac. Bergamot and lemon open onto a heart of cinnamon, orange blossom and jasmine, set on sandalwood, vetiver and patchouli, with touches of amber, tobacco, musk and honey. Its vivid pink juice, which the house presents as a first for a men’s fragrance, is its signature.

The house opens Joop! Homme on the freshness of bergamot, lifted by a touch of lemon. The heart brings together cinnamon, orange blossom and jasmine, a meeting of warm spice and white flowers that the house describes as the fire of the fragrance.

A woody, honeyed base

The base combines sandalwood, vetiver and patchouli, enhanced by a touch of amber, tobacco, musk and honey. This woody, sweet foundation, warm and tenacious, explains the fragrance’s place among the orientals.

Other descriptions of the fragrance

The house’s British presentation divides the fragrance differently: bergamot, cinnamon and honey at the top, orange blossom, heliotrope and tobacco at the heart, patchouli, tonka bean, vanilla and amber at the base. It classifies it among the amber fougères.

Older presentations also cited mandarin, lily of the valley, heliotrope, vanilla and tonka bean, around citrus, cinnamon and sandalwood. These notes no longer appear in the house’s current description.

What the label declares

The ingredient list declares coumarin, a molecule with a hay-like scent, and cinnamal, a constituent of cinnamon oil. Limonene and citral belong to citrus, eugenol evokes clove, while linalool, geraniol, hydroxycitronellal and alpha-isomethyl ionone bring floral tones. Three colorants give the juice its pink hue.
