Marshmallow

Marshmallow, also known as Wild Marshmallow or White Mallow, is a herbaceous perennial plant belonging to the Malvaceae family. Marshmallow is native to the humid regions of Europe, Russia, and China. In France, marshmallow grows mainly along the Atlantic coast, in salt marshes, meadows and waterways. Marshmallow has an ornamental use, but also a vegetable-garden and medicinal one. Its foliage is gray or silvery while its flowers (with 5 petals) range from white to pink. Particularly rich in mucilage, marshmallow is renowned for its sweet, elastic confectionery.

The infinite sweetness of marshmallow

Marshmallow is the confectionery that gently cradles our childhood. Created in 1972 by Haribo, the Chamallows marshmallow candy revolutionized the world of sweets. With its pastel and lively colors, marshmallow has become the best friend of children, but also of adults! Marshmallow gives off a soft, sweet scent. It also presents vanilla-like and slightly powdery characteristics. Very sweet and rather addictive, marshmallow is used wonderfully in gourmand fragrances. There, it offers roundness, softness, and also an infinite sweetness. Whether in a candle, a shower gel, an Eau de Toilette or a perfume, marshmallow inevitably takes us back to our childhood.

The house Réminiscence gave a wonderful gift to our childhood sweet tooth by naming one of its perfumes Guimauve. This one is part of the collection Les notes gourmandes. By slipping sweet notes into perfumes, perfumers call upon the hedonic values of our early childhood. The gustatory aspect is highlighted, but also the comforting side… Against all expectations, marshmallow is not found only in gourmand perfumes. It can also be discovered in oriental fragrances such as D&G pour femme by Dolce & Gabbana. Here, marshmallow is positioned as a base note, alongside heliotrope, vanilla and sandalwood. Floral, soft and suave, D&G is an ode to femininity. Another floral oriental perfume composed with marshmallow is Ultrared by Paco Rabanne, which combines marshmallow, jasmine and star anise. Marshmallow can also be found at the heart of floral perfumes such as Mademoiselle Guerlain by Guerlain. Here, marshmallow appears as a heart note paired with orange blossom, for a scent described as a hymn to joy and freedom.

Because it reminds us of childhood, marshmallow holds a privileged place in the hearts of adults. Sweet, soft and airy, marshmallow is used in cosmetics and perfumery. It blends into floral, fruity, oriental, citrus or woody fragrances.
