Mugler Womanity

Womanity, the fragrance of feminine solidarity by Thierry Mugler arrived in Paris in 1969, when he was 24 years old. There, he created his first designer boutique, which he named Gudule. His very distinctive style quickly won people over. Described as a shock designer, Thierry Mugler enjoyed working with raw materials. Capable of constant innovation, Thierry Mugler took flight in perfumery in 1990, with the help of Clarins. His first composition, Angel, was a true revolution in the world of perfumery.

How could one forget the fabulous success of Angel, father of all gourmand fragrances, which launched Mugler fragrances to the pinnacle of perfumery stardom? Since 1992, Mugler's bright star has continued to enchant with its scents, and fine successors have followed one another, without ever quite matching its success. With Womanity in 2010, Mugler attempts to recreate the event of unprecedented olfactory discoveries and offers us, as if to surprise us further, sweet-and-salty accords of flawless originality.

Womanity, the fragrance with a thousand Mugler faces, a hidden “son” of Angel?

Angel, the fragrance one adores or the fragrance one abhors, is regarded as one of the bestsellers of modern perfumery. Released in 1992, it was composed as a major work of perfumery, meant to be as representative as possible of one of the giants of haute couture, Thierry Mugler. Yet, while its success is beyond dispute, opinions on this very first gourmand fragrance have never ceased to be divided. Which paradoxically appears to be one of the sources of its immense success.

Building on this observation, the Thierry Mugler perfume house worked on an innovative project: Womanity. The aim of this composition was not to please everyone but rather to create an event around a fragrance described as polarizing, a fragrance subject to controversy, so to speak, much like Poison in its time. And the least that can be said is that the work on Womanity by the two great perfumers Fabrice Pellegrin and Karine Dubreuil is entirely consistent with the intended effect: Womanity resembles no other fragrance!

The distinctiveness of Womanity lies mainly in these sweet-and-salty accords, but also in a good number of technological innovations used in the treatment of raw materials. Indeed, the perfumers used remarkable molecular extraction methods to considerably reduce the barriers between scents and tastes. As a result, both the Fig and the Caviar of Womanity seem natural, as though one could bring them to the mouth. This significant work of olfactory techniques behind Womanity was moreover recognized with the Fragrance Foundation's 2010 Perfume Award.

The unprecedented sweet-and-salty notes of Womanity by Thierry Mugler

As mentioned, the creation of Womanity represents considerable research work for its two perfumers. Simply because Thierry Mugler wanted a different and original fragrance that would represent all the facets of women around the world. Thus, the raw materials chosen were combined to create a clear contrast between the gourmand warmth of the sweet and the assertive taste of the salty.

Womanity opens on relatively classic citrus and green freshness, if not for the appearance of a woody hazelnut note. It is truly at the heart of this multifaceted, fragrant woman that the contrasts become strongest. Solar notes clash with iodized notes (the famous Caviar note), and rustic Fig sweeps these opposing winds along in its path, carrying them toward the woods. Indeed, amber notes, patchouli and vanilla bring this most original journey to a close, nestling into leaves and Fig tree wood with a milky scent.
