The history of perfume goes back to the highest antiquity. Nevertheless, it only developed much later in France. As such, Grasse is a Provençal city that organized itself around this activity as early as the Middle Ages. It must be said that the Grasse region is particularly favored by its climate, which contributes to growing the most beautiful flowers on the planet. The city now known as the “world capital of perfumery” is home to several great perfume houses. Molinard is one of them, and has been showcasing its expertise since 1849.

It was in 1849 that the Molinard house was founded in the south of France, in Provence. This family business is the oldest in the region. At first, it mainly produced Flower Waters and Eaux de Cologne sold in the brand's small shop located in the heart of the city. Nevertheless, wishing to offer a more refined perfumery, the Molinard house created new perfumes in 1960, based on prestigious flowers such as jasmine, rose, mimosa or violet. These were then contained in elegant Baccarat crystal bottles. Recognition came in 1891, when Queen Victoria stayed in Grasse. She purchased Eaux de Cologne from Molinard and greatly contributed to establishing the brand's reputation. From 1900, Molinard was thus able to expand into a larger factory, an address that has since become iconic. This attracted wealthy foreigners, mostly English and Russian. From then on, creations followed one after another. In 1921, the Habanista juice was created, followed by Concréta, two essences still sold today. Faced with such success, Molinard decided to surround itself with the greatest names and called upon the glassmaker René Lalique to create magnificent bottles for its perfumes. Since that day, Molinard's creations have given pride of place to French perfumery. The name of this house resonates across the entire planet as a symbol of luxury, refinement and ancestral craftsmanship.
The Molinard museum
Molinard's reputation is such that a museum in its honor can be visited in Grasse. This address is one of the most famous in the perfumery sector. It must be said that there is so much to tell about it! As part of our heritage, Molinard also left its mark on the history of France by brightening the daily lives of soldiers during World War II. Indeed, Molinard had the “prisoner's parcel” delivered to them to bring a little comfort. Beyond the historical contribution of this museum, Molinard also offers to introduce visitors to the world of perfumery through discovering the different stages of perfume manufacturing, a palette of 5000 to 6000 different essences, or the distillation room dating from the late nineteenth century. If you have the chance to visit, you will discover 500 small perfume bottles making up what is called the “perfume organ”, a maceration cellar as well as a collection of vintage labels.
