The eventful history of the Burberry brand
The history of Burberry began in 1856 when Thomas Burberry consulted his doctor about rheumatism problems. The doctor advised him to stop wearing his rubber raincoat, which did not allow perspiration to evaporate and contributed to back pain. Around the same time, Thomas Burberry opened a shop 80 km from London, when he was barely 21 years old. He was a young designer who dressed the notable figures of his region and specialized in sportswear and outdoor clothing. Wanting to create a raincoat that was waterproof yet breathable, Thomas Burberry invented gabardine, a fabric that protects against cold, with a ventilated weave that nonetheless resists rain. He patented this new fabric in 1888 and used it to create a now iconic jacket: the famous Burberry trench coat. In 1891, Thomas Burberry opened his first shop in London. Achieving great success with his gabardine, he was commissioned by the Minister of Defense to design new uniforms for British officers. Burberry's reputation continued to grow from there. Likewise, 1924 was another key date for Burberry. It was the year the famous white, black, and camel tartan, now emblematic of the house, was invented. And although the brand was passed down to Thomas Burberry's descendants, its success never wavered. Today, many celebrities wear the brand's famous pattern, and the trench coat has remained a staple piece in many wardrobes. Moreover, Burberry is marked by an extraordinary ability to bounce back and reinvent itself to stay current. This is also why its range has expanded to include other products.
Burberry in perfumery
Far from confining itself to the world of fashion, Burberry also turned toward perfumery. In 1995, a fragrance named Burberrys for Women was born. It was a sensual Eau de Parfum, perfectly embodying the classic and timeless style inherited from the Burberry brand. It was joined by its masculine counterpart the same year. Since then, the creation of new fragrances has never stopped. Sometimes strict, sometimes more casual, Burberry fragrances fit beautifully into the style and history of the house of Burberry. Many of them display strong visual codes. For instance, the Burberry Brit bottle is decorated with the house's tartan, while the new My Burberry bottles feature a gabardine bow at the neck and are topped with a horn cap resembling the buttons of the famous trench coat. In other words, wearing a Burberry fragrance is a little like immersing oneself in the rich history of this great British house.
