Serge Majoullier

The profession of perfumer is today extremely rare and includes only a chosen few. As an example, note that they numbered no more than 500 in 2010. While some are independent, others belong to large groups specializing in the creation of fragrances or food flavors. Among them is the company Mane. It is a family-owned group of about 80 people that has to contend with certain giants of the sector such as Givaudan or IFF.

If they nevertheless manage to win over certain great perfumers, it is above all because they are recognized for their historic expertise in mastering ingredients. Thus, some of the great names in perfumery explore there the most luxurious and exceptional raw materials the planet has to offer. Such is the case of Serge Majoullier.

Serge Majoullier's career

Like many perfumers, Serge Majoullier was born in Grasse. He very quickly turned to studies in chemistry with a view to one day joining the perfume industry. Indeed, how could one not succumb to the call of scents having grown up in this region dotted with flower fields and known worldwide for its perfumes? Then, very early on, he joined the analysis and chromatography department of the company Mane. Still within the same group, he joined the essential oils and floral products department. It was thus that he became a nose. His innate talent for scents and his passion for perfumes earned him quick recognition. Likewise, this allowed him to rise to the very top of his art, reaching the position of director of perfumery in 1995. Serge Majoullier has a highly developed creative sense. Yet he is also passionate about research. As such, he always keeps one foot in this field and works in particular on various extraction processes and on the development of raw materials.

Serge Majoullier's sources of inspiration

Serge Majoullier states: nature is of course my main source of inspiration. He explains, for example, that it was while recalling the treatment of iris, which he says has always evoked hints of chocolate for him, that the idea for the accord of Femme Bleu by Armani Privé came to him. Besides our planet as a source of creativity, Serge Majoullier also enjoys stimulating his imagination through cooking. He particularly likes the pairings imagined by chefs and sees in the craft of the cook an art that resembles perfumery in many respects. Thus, he very often creates gourmand fragrances. Finally, above all he loves to travel and draws ideas from all four corners of the globe. There he draws inspiration from everyday scents that he sometimes finds in local markets. What is more, his research also leads him to discover new materials himself, so as to further expand the field of possibilities.

Serge Majoullier is the creator of very many perfumes. Among his emblematic creations are, among others, Elle l’Aime by Lolita Lempicka, Bonbon by Viktor & Rolf, in collaboration with Cécile Matton, or also Parfum by Nuxe.
