The world of perfumery is a fairly closed sector. As such, only a few select people on the planet can boast of holding the position of perfumer. Likewise, most of them come from a family of perfumers themselves or were born in the Mediterranean region of Grasse, the world capital of perfumery. In this case, it is precisely in this city that Jean-Claude Ellena grew up, today considered one of the most renowned perfumers in the world.

The exemplary career of Jean-Claude Ellena

Jean-Claude Ellena was born in Grasse and his father was himself a perfumer. Thus, perfumery always appeared to him as his destiny. This is how he began his training at the age of 16 at Chiris before joining, in 1968, the Givaudan perfumery school located in Geneva. At just 28 years old, he signed his first major success named First for the house Van Cleef & Arpels. However, this fragrance is not, according to its creator himself, very representative of the world of Jean-Claude Ellena. Indeed, he describes it as a stacking of components while his creations today are much more pared down. After living with his wife and children in Paris then in New York, Jean-Claude Ellena decided to return to his native land and it was then that he was approached by the house Hermès for the creation of the fragrance Jardin en Méditerranée. Given the success of this juice, Jean-Claude Ellena became the exclusive nose of the house starting in 2004. Since that day, he has continued to achieve one success after another.

The pared-down world of Jean-Claude Ellena

If Jean-Claude Ellena is considered a brilliant perfumer, it is simply because he writes short, pared-down formulas that go straight to the essential. As he explains, his craft consists in making you believe with very little means. As an example, he manages to recreate the smell of chocolate using only two molecules: isobutyl phenylacetate and vanillin. Yet natural cocoa contains more than 900 molecules! In this sense, Jean-Claude Ellena is almost an illusionist. He creates his formulas by hand with only about 200 raw material extracts while most perfumers use 1200. Élisabeth de Feydeau, perfume historian, says of him that his fragrances are airy, evanescent, they evoke Japanese haikus. In reality, the fragrances of Jean-Claude Ellena arise from a complex intellectual approach and are never a matter of a crude marketing creation. The choice of his components is thus made with great boldness and a perfect mastery of the craft of perfumery.

Jean-Claude Ellena is a perfumer who likes to indulge himself and who does not skimp on means when it comes to choosing raw materials. He denies himself no luxury, unabashedly incorporating the finest quality iris, may rose, or rare woods into his fragrances. His dream now is for fragrances to be commonly discussed the way connoisseurs discuss a wine.
