Thus, this artistic dandy realizes his dreams through his scents, creating his own trends and often reserving them for initiated perfume consumers. Once again, it is precisely in this register that the 2020 perfume Fils de Joie fits. Completely unexpected, it takes us back into the creator's childhood memories. So, what is really the story with this new juice inspired by the North of France? Remarkable or simply pleasant? Surprising or altogether disconcerting? Here is our take on it.

Olfastory’s review

Serge Lutens completely changes settings and geographical universe

Serge Lutens very often likes to draw inspiration from the Orient to design his perfumes. Indeed, he makes sandalwood, amber or incense his star ingredients. Here, however, he surprises us and takes us to an entirely different place: the North of France. Indeed, that is where Serge Lutens spent his childhood. This perfume conveys to us the surreal atmosphere of a bar in the North experienced through a child's eyes. If the idea is atypical, it certainly hits the mark! Moreover, while the atmosphere may seem dark at first glance, Serge Lutens evokes it in an optimistic way, a rather rare thing in his creations worth pointing out. Moreover, this aspect is largely highlighted by the enigmatic sentence accompanying this perfume: Laughter waits, a sentence, a word, a situation, in order to declare itself. It can burst out or be smothered by the hand that hides it, but if it is genuine, it cannot be held back. On skin, its note is a daughter of shadow but, paradoxically, it illuminates! […] The laughter of the disenchanted is the laughter that bursts out for no reason from the fils de joie. As a child, in the shadows, he learned its intoxication, its tears and its illusions. Today, he gives us back its light in a splendid scent of mesk-ellil. Undeniably, Serge Lutens seems to retain a few happy memories of his childhood, which he chooses this time to highlight in a fragrance. In this sense, Fils de Joie is a perfume diametrically opposed to his other creations, which are often darker and more somber.

Serge Lutens signs a luminous perfume crafted from noble ingredients

As always, Serge Lutens incorporates highly refined ingredients and luxurious, rigorously selected raw materials into his perfume. To symbolize the laughter and the bright spark in the eyes of the child he once was, he relied on sun-kissed ingredients. Thus, Fils de Joie by Serge Lutens contains ylang-ylang and jasmine. The latter is worked in an animalic and spicy way, revealing all its facets, as the talented Serge Lutens knows so well how to do. Better still, it is combined with powdery, carnal linden blossom, while the musk lays down a delightful animalic and narcotic scent in its sillage. Once again, Serge Lutens signs a masterful perfume inspired by his own existence.
