Musk is an eau de toilette from Alyssa Ashley, the line created by Enrico Donati within Houbigant. Designed without gender and sold since the late nineteen-sixties, it carries, according to the house, a Sicilian bergamot at the top, a heart of jasmine, geranium, rose and ylang-ylang, and a base of iris, vanilla, tonka bean and musk.
Varanis Ridari, of The Scented Devil, sees it as a benchmark among synthetic musks, but more floral than musky: an honest perfume without surprises, which he compares to industrial white bread.
What critics say
Varanis Ridari, The Scented Devil, May 2021
Varanis Ridari regards Musk as a benchmark among synthetic musk perfumes, one that brought the general public back to musk and spawned a host of imitations, unisex or released in pairs. He links it to Houbigant’s Parfums Parquet division.
He warns that the perfume is more floral than musky. Like CK One, it opens on a soft white florality, without citrus: jasmine and violet over an iris note, a little powder and sandalwood, fluffy musks and a hint of carnation.
He says he does not dislike it, but compares it to industrial white bread for anyone used to whole-grain loaves.
