Musk is an eau de toilette from Alyssa Ashley, the line created by Enrico Donati within Houbigant. Designed without gender and sold since the late nineteen-sixties, it carries, according to the house, a Sicilian bergamot at the top, a heart of jasmine, geranium, rose and ylang-ylang, and a base of iris, vanilla, tonka bean and musk.
Alyssa Ashley breaks Musk down into three stages: Sicilian bergamot at the top; jasmine absolute, geranium, rose absolute and ylang-ylang at the heart; iris absolute, vanilla, tonka bean and musk at the base. Its description adds citrus to the opening.
The house speaks of a delicate, sweet perfume whose sensual base of iris and musk is lifted by a touch of vanilla and tonka. It places it in its Musk family, alongside White Musk, Amber Musk, Tonka Musk and Rose Musk.
What the label declares
Behind the alcohol, water and fragrance, the eau de toilette’s ingredient list names alpha isomethyl ionone, amyl cinnamal, benzyl alcohol, benzyl benzoate, benzyl salicylate, citronellol, coumarin, eugenol, geraniol, hydroxycitronellal, limonene, linalool and a yellow colorant, CI 47005.
What the list adds
Alpha isomethyl ionone, with its powdery violet smell, and coumarin join the iris and tonka base the house declares. Geraniol and citronellol go with the geranium and rose of the heart, and amyl cinnamal brings a jasmine nuance. The musk does not appear under its name.
