Frangipani

Every year we take particular pleasure in finding the frangipani flower in the beautiful floral or oriental, but above all summery, creations of our favorite perfumery creators, the frangipani flower being especially linked to solar notes.

Frangipani, the tree with magical powers from the Antilles

Frangipani originates from the Antilles, more specifically Venezuela, even if today many tropical regions of the African or Asian continent benefit from this lovely fragrant tree.

In Asia, frangipani is a sacred tree that is planted near temples or cemeteries. Very much associated with spirits, whatever the beliefs, frangipani is in fact never planted near a dwelling because for Asians it is thought to shelter the lost souls of the dead.

In Laos, the frangipani flower is in fact the national emblem, as it is believed in East Asia that frangipani is a tree of eternal life. Polynesia is very much associated with this flower, even though it is in fact the tiare flower that is Polynesian, and frangipani remains highly regarded by the inhabitants who devote a spiritual reverence to it.

Is it because of the fragrances of its white or pink flowers that frangipani would be magical? Hard to say, however the exotic and delightfully vanilla and almond scents of the frangipani flower leave no one indifferent. It is therefore logical to find, in our fragrances, the frangipani flower note (nothing to do with the pastry, of course!) in lovely sun-kissed summer fragrances.

As we have already seen, the frangipani flower and the tiare flower are often mistaken for one another: on the one hand because they resemble each other, and on the other because their olfactory notes are both associated with the solar note and summer waters.

The frangipani flower brings to our fragrances powerful vanilla and almond effluvia that smell of vacations under the Tropical sun. Thanks to the summer fragrance trend, the frangipani flower is especially used for floral fragrances in which its powdery and gourmand facet is revealed, or for floral orientals where it is the powerfully exotic facet of frangipani that is showcased.

Thus, among florals, the frangipani flower is very often a heart note. For “Amor Amor Summer” by Cacharel, the frangipani flower is paired with rose and grenadine; for “ANGE OU DEMON LE SECRET Elixir” by Givenchy and “Couleur Kenzo Jaune Yellow”, the frangipani note is blended with jasmine and orange blossom.

As for oriental fragrances, Thierry Mugler pairs the frangipani flower with floral notes in “ALIEN Sunessence”, while Cacharel pairs it with the peony note in “Amor Amor Forbidden Kiss”. Yves Saint-Laurent, for its part, uses the frangipani flower in “Manifesto L'Elixir” to create a more original heart composition of frangipani, coconut, and tiare.

The frangipani flower would thus seem, for now, to be the preferred domain of almost exclusively feminine summer waters. Oriental, floral, or sometimes even citrus, fragrances call upon this lovely flower with delicacy to adorn our sun-warmed skin… Exoticism at its finest!
