Chestnut

Chestnut is a reconstructed note in perfumery, since the fruit of the chestnut tree does not yield a common extract usable in composition. Perfumers draw on the sensory evocation of the fruit, particularly roasted or cooked, to create a gourmand note with floury, sweet, slightly woody and milky accents. It fits naturally within autumnal gourmand families and soft woody accords, bringing warmth and roundness.

The chestnut tree bears a fruit, the chestnut, associated with deep gustatory and olfactory sensations, particularly those of the fruit roasted or boiled in water. However, this fruit is not the subject of a common perfumery extraction, and no chestnut absolute or essential oil is available in the perfumer's usual palette. The chestnut note is therefore entirely an olfactory reconstruction.

Perfumers seek to recreate the evocation of the warm, floury and slightly sweet fruit, combining materials with milky facets, soft woody notes and slightly toasted accents. The whole aims to summon the sensory memory of roasted chestnut, with its characteristic floury sweetness and comforting warmth.

This note fits naturally within gourmand compositions of an autumnal character, where it accompanies accords of soft wood, vanilla or light spicy notes. Its floury roundness and discretion make it a base ingredient valued for bringing depth without weighing down the composition.

Reconstructed chestnut readily pairs with dry woods, tonka bean or soft musks, creating warm, enveloping accords. It can also combine with light smoky facets to reinforce the evocation of the roasted fruit, grounding the composition in an atmosphere of cold-weather comfort and inner sweetness.
