Guaiac wood

A warm and smoky woody essence Until the appearance of woody perfumes in the 60s, guaiac wood was known far more for its unfailing solidity than for the olfactory qualities of its essence. Yet, from the very first woody fragrances, guaiac wood bark was quickly used as a fixative agent but also as a raw material resembling, at times almost indistinguishably, vetiver. Today many perfumes use guaiac wood as a base note to create a stable structure but also as a heart note to blend with typically woody scents such as cedar or sandalwood.

The recent discovery of guaiac wood in perfumery

The Latin origins of the small guaiac tree from South America mean “wood of life”, perhaps because it is one of the densest and most resistant woods in the world. Thus guaiac wood, long before being used in perfumery or even for its medicinal properties, was used to build certain boat parts, wooden toys, furniture, or even… bowling balls!

Yet the resin obtained from guaiac wood bark was recognized as early as 1884 as a medical remedy for its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anti-rheumatic and even aphrodisiac properties! It was only with the appearance of woody perfumes on the market in the 1960s that guaiac wood finally won the favor of the great perfume houses for its chemical and olfactory properties.

In perfumery, it is particularly appreciated for its qualities as a bridge between heart notes and base notes in woody, oriental, amber perfumes or those with fougère accords. It also has far greater olfactory qualities still to offer to the fine noses who create our perfumes...

Guaiac wood and the phenomenal rise of woody perfumes

Guaiac wood had, until the phenomenal success of woody perfumes for men, only a fixative function, whereas it could offer so much more!
Guaiac wood essence offers smoky, woody, slightly balsamic scents reminiscent of certain leathery notes. Naturally, from the very first success of the woody perfume, "Vétiver" by Carven in 1957, guaiac essence was one of the near-essential components of woody perfumes for men, so much does the roundness of its fragrance ennoble and envelop the scents of vetiver, sandalwood or cedar. As woody perfumes became masculine classics, guaiac wood became one of the indispensable raw materials of the woody fragrance.

However, make no mistake, guaiac wood is also used by many other olfactory families. It blends perfectly with the amber notes of sandalwood or ambrette but also with gourmand notes of vanilla. Finally, even more surprisingly, guaiac wood achieves perfect compositions with floral notes of champaca or palmarosa!

If we tend, because of its smoky and woody effluvia, to think that guaiac wood belongs exclusively to the masculine woody family, we would be making a serious mistake! First of all because woody perfumes attract more and more women drawn to powerful vegetal scents and to sweet, deep essences such as guaiac wood. And finally, quite simply, because guaiac wood, presenting remarkable stability as well as a perfect blend between different olfactory notes, is now one of the most widely used raw materials in perfumery.
