Ebony

Ebony is a wood supplied by the ebony tree. It is known for being very heavy and very hard, but above all for its color, as the expression Ebony Black is often used. Introduced in Europe in the 12th century, ebony wood is considered a precious wood. At first, it was mainly used to make chests, chess sets, or knife handles. Ebony wood is found mainly in the tropical regions of Africa. Its tree can grow up to 30 meters tall. Ebony ranges in color from dark brown to black. It can be marbled or have a very uniform black color.

Ebony wood, a rare essence

Like Mahogany, Cedar, or cayenne wood, ebony wood is used in perfumery. The essence is generally extracted from the heart of the wood, and ebony wood, like other woods, is very expensive. Ebony wood has nonetheless managed to find its place in niche perfumery. It gives off rounded, warm scents. Both warm and woody, ebony wood is mainly found in masculine fragrances and in base notes, where it lends full depth. Ebony wood gives a composition warmth and intensity. Beyond its scent, it transports one to distant lands and fills the mind with dreams. Given its price, essences that contain ebony wood are generally rather costly.

Ebony wood and its olfactory pairings

Ebony wood belongs to the Woody olfactory family. Woody notes are considered “hinge” notes, often serving as the foundation of a composition. Woody notes generally give a perfume significant character. For this reason, ebony wood is very often found in predominantly Oriental compositions, as in Black XS by Paco Rabanne, where ebony wood is paired, in base notes, with Rosewood, Patchouli, and also black Amber. Ebony wood is of course also found in woody fragrances, mainly masculine, as in Révélations by Pierre Cardin, where ebony wood is again positioned in base notes, alongside White musks and Rosewood. Owing to its rarity and precious character, ebony wood is found in special collections, in precious perfumes such as Miel de Bois by Serge Lutens. Here, ebony wood is positioned in top notes, which is particularly rare. It is paired with Oakwood and Guaiac wood, giving the Serge Lutens perfume character and power.

Known for its very luminous dark black color, ebony wood comes from the tropical regions of Africa. An expensive, rare, precious wood, ebony wood has found its place within exceptional perfumes.
