While some perfume houses boast a history spanning several centuries, others, such as Diptyque, are more recent. The latter remain nonetheless just as prestigious and endowed with exceptional expertise.

CitrusThe foundations of Diptyque
The story of Diptyque began in Paris, at 34 Boulevard Saint-Germain, in 1961. Three friends named Christiane Gautrot, an interior designer, Desmond Knox-Leet, a painter, and Yves Coueslant, an administrator and theater set designer, decided to join forces. Together they opened a shop in which to display their textile creations. Christiane and Desmond quickly emerged as the creative souls of the venture, while Yves handled the administration of this fledgling enterprise. Little by little, the shop transformed into a place apart, a sort of chic bazaar filled with numerous curious and unexpected objects found on their travels. Then, barely two years later, Diptyque expressed the desire to expand its activity. Thus a first range of scented candles was launched in 1963. This range paid tribute to nature and aimed to create an intimate olfactory world in constant evolution, following the rhythm of the seasons. This launch also served as the foundation for the house's olfactory activity, which soon turned toward perfumery.
Diptyque fragrances
It was in 1968 that Diptyque decided to compose its first Eau de Toilette. It was simply named L'Eau and based its formula on the scent of a sixteenth-century potpourri. New creations soon followed, accompanied also by body products and toilet vinegar. Thus, for more than 40 years, Diptyque has been crafting fragrances unlike any other, always distinctive in style and most often reserved for a knowledgeable clientele. The house of Diptyque today has no equivalent in the broad landscape of perfumery. Each of its fragrances is created without distinction of masculine or feminine gender. In this sense, Diptyque has always shown profound boldness and an avant-garde spirit tied to the androgynous movement. Each raw material used by Diptyque is carefully selected, always noble and precious. Likewise, the house's creative process is always very slow, neglecting no detail until the perfect balance is found. Diptyque thus makes it a point of honor never to compromise. Similarly, in terms of bottle design, Diptyque champions luxury craftsmanship and always opts for unique, refined bottles. Each one is made in the purest tradition of handcrafted work. Finally, as if that were not enough, it should be noted that every Diptyque product is delivered in a lovely gift wrapping, which has itself become a signature of the house. It consists of an arrangement of three sheets of tissue paper which, through a skillful folding technique, marks and identifies the product it contains. Thus, each item has its own unique color code, its own unique bottle, and its own unique scent, which reacts differently upon contact with each person's skin.
