Mathieu Nardin, perfumer from father to son If some perfumers come to this path out of love for scents or almost by chance, it must be acknowledged that this is not the majority of cases. Very often, this passion for perfumery is passed down from generation to generation. Thus, the area around the city of Grasse has seen the birth of a great many perfumers. It must be said that this Provençal city has been considered the capital of perfumery since the 16th century. Knowledge of plants and scents is passed down from father to son, and it is precisely in this environment that Mathieu Nardin was immersed throughout his childhood.
Mathieu Nardin, a child of perfumery
Mathieu Nardin does not really stand out for originality, and follows a fairly conventional path. Originally from Grasse, he was immersed very early on in the world of perfume, and choosing this profession was for him a matter of course. He was raised in a family of perfumers, which very quickly developed his creativity and his sense of smell. He also mentions that his earliest olfactory memories are those of fresh and captivating jasmine at first light on summer mornings. His grandparents regularly took him flower picking when he was a child. He liked to wander through rose fields, and thus developed a deep respect for the finest raw materials. His older brother is also a perfumer. Together, they followed a school path closely tied to this world. Mathieu Nardin's first professional experience within a perfumery dates back to when he was 13 years old, when he did an internship at Robertet. After obtaining a baccalaureate in chemistry, he joined the most prestigious perfumery school in the world: ISIPCA in Versailles. He completed his apprenticeship on a work-study basis at Robertet, a company where he still works today.
Mathieu Nardin, a lover of spicy fragrances
Mathieu Nardin is a perfumer who likes to explore multiple worlds. Like many people his age, he is passionate about traveling abroad, and draws unfailing inspiration from it. During his explorations, he spends most of his time focusing on the scents around him. For him, the nose is skillfully linked to memory and to images. He works on himself constantly, and thus conveys a part of his personality and his history in each of his compositions. As such, while he enjoys working with a multitude of different scents, Mathieu Nardin admits to truly loving incense and labdanum, two raw materials that are both very rich and complex. A particularly prolific perfumer, Mathieu Nardin constantly works on several projects at once. Indeed, he often likes to set a fragrance aside to come back to it later, after having gained some distance. That is where he explores the best of his creativity. He lets the notes macerate and then returns to them with a fresher nose. This highly versatile figure is far from done surprising us, and it seems that a future rich in creations already awaits him.
