Tulip
Tulip, emblem of spring Tulip is a bulb plant that blooms in spring and announces the arrival of fine weather. National symbol of the Netherlands, it was imported from the East at the beginning of the 19th century and then gradually diversified, until it now numbers thousands of varieties. Each tulip has different leaves and flowers, available in an infinite range of colors. The earliest tulips begin to bloom as soon as March. The latest among them, on the other hand, come to color gardens around May. Some are perfectly uniform while others are variegated. Some tulips have perfectly smooth petals, while others are fringed or slightly tapered. These are known as parrot tulips or lily-flowered tulips. In bouquets or in gardens, tulip is a flower that is always highly appreciated, a symbol of joie de vivre and cheerfulness.
Tulip, a symbol of love
Like all flowers, tulip carries a symbolism directly attached to it. It is a flower of love par excellence. However, beware of the color chosen… Each one symbolizes a different kind of love. The yellow of a tulip is the token of an impossible love. Red varieties with a black heart are the sign of a wild passion and are often given as a declaration of love. Giving it in pink is worth a shy kiss on the cheek. The black tulip, for its part, is the dream of every horticulturist and also the muse of many writers. Indeed, the evocation of tulip is very present in the tales of the Thousand and One Nights, in which the flower is always perceived as a symbol of love. Finally, tulip is traditionally given for the third wedding anniversary.
Tulip, a silent flower
While tulip is very commonly used in bouquets, it is, on the other hand, much less present in perfumery. And for good reason… It is a silent flower, giving off no scent. In this sense, it is very similar to poppies. Yet some houses have taken up the bold challenge of incorporating it into their fragrances! In such cases, it is rather the evocation of an imaginary tulip, straight out of perfumers' creative minds. La Tulipe by Byredo is a perfect demonstration of this. Created in 2010, it evokes spring and was designed with this beautiful, ephemeral flower in mind. The tulip accord is present at its heart, accompanying cyclamen and freesia. This composition gives off a delicate and sparkling breath, both vegetal and very airy. After all, what better way to evoke spring than this?
