Ivy is an evergreen climbing plant, found in many temperate environments, where it carpets walls, trunks and shaded ground. Despite the richness of its foliage, this plant is not the subject of common perfumery extraction, and no essential oil or absolute of ivy is available in the perfumer's usual palette. The ivy note is therefore entirely an olfactory reconstruction.
The intended olfactory profile evokes the dense, damp foliage of ivy growing in the shade, with its slightly bitter green nuances and characteristic minerality. Perfumers build this note from raw materials with vegetal, herbaceous and slightly watery facets, to recreate the sensation of a cool, shaded undergrowth.
In composition, the ivy note is integrated into green accords, chypres and fresh florals. It brings a dark, natural vegetal dimension that contrasts with bright floral notes, creating a depth and complexity appreciated in compositions with a natural, earthy character.
Its slight bitterness and minerality make it a valuable ingredient for structuring green accords without making them too herbaceous or too simple.
