Turmeric, a fragrant spice with multiple virtues

Turmeric is an herbaceous plant that has numerous aromatic rhizomes, yellow or orange on the inside. Its spikes can measure up to 20 cm and turmeric is a plant that is very present in India and Malaysia. It withstands monsoons very well and requires both plenty of sunshine and very fertile soil. Consequently, turmeric is a spice widely used in Asian cooking. It is the main ingredient in curry, giving it as much flavor as color. Moreover, the word turmeric comes from the Sanskrit kunkuma, which literally translates as that which gives color. Besides its culinary use, turmeric is also the source of many beliefs and legends. In India, it is considered a sacred spice. Associated with fertility, turmeric is used during weddings. In Malaysia, turmeric paste is spread on the bellies of pregnant women to ward off evil spirits. In China, it is said to improve circulation. In Indochina, it fights against mosquitoes. In Thailand, it is used as an antidote to cobra bites. Likewise, turmeric is also an excellent healing agent. It is therefore not uncommon to see it used in traditional medicine.

Turmeric in perfumery

Like most spices, turmeric can be used just as much in feminine perfumery as in masculine perfumery. It brings a certain power to the fragrances that contain it, and recalls in some ways the odor of saffron. Less used than cinnamon, ginger or pepper, it nonetheless remains a very interesting olfactory note. Turmeric is often placed in the heart notes of perfumes, and thus only reveals itself in a second stage, once the top notes have already evaporated. It can just as easily be paired with floral, fruity or woody notes. Turmeric essential oil is obtained by distillation. Among the most famous perfumes that contain it, Lys Fumé by Tom Ford is a perfect example. It gives off a typically Indian scent and immerses one in the heart of a lush tropical garden, blending floral odors with smoldering spices.
